“Budget Boutique Hotel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2009

An excellent choice in Bologna. For 70 Euros we got a spacious double room with breakfast and free WiFi, in a totally renovated, upscale hotel that has the feel of a boutique hotel. It is 2 mins from the heart of Bologna, but 10 mins by taxi from the train station. Staff and service were excellent. Would stay here agin any time.

I stayed at the Centrale for five days on two occasions in April. The first time the room was OK, clean and functional. The rate dropped after I booked and they honored the lower rate. On my return two weeks later I was given room 18, larger and with a view. It was a tremendous value. The breakfast was probably the best in my stay at 4 different hotels on this trip even though the Centrale had the lowest star rating. The staff were very helpful and the location is fantastic since it is only two blocks away from Piazza Maggiore and the towers.

We paid ~$120/night, and we felt it was overpriced for what you’re getting. The location is great (very nearby Piazza Maggiore), but the room is very plain. Breakfast is really excellent! I would have had no complaints if we paid something more like ~$100/night.

A really great find. Super clean, good breakfast, and well informed friendly staff. For a big city hotel it has small city hospitality and very helpful staff.

We have been going to Albergo Centrale for years and always look forward to the warm, friendly greeting from Werter and his staff. We have seen many changes over the past 10 years including the replacement of the rickety, iron gated elevator, new furniture and more options for breakfast , but it always feels good to be back. We could not get a booking one year and were decidedly unhappy with the business hotel that cost 50% more with 50% less charm than Albergo Centrale. Centrale is always our first choice for value and location in Bologna.

I once asked the owner why the hotel only had 2 stars since he provided everything we find in 3 star hotels (private baths, hairdryers, toiletries, television, wardrobe, desk, refrigerator). His answer was very revealing, he wanted to stay a 2 star hotel because there were fewer of them and many travelers felt they could not afford 3 star hotels. This is a man who appreciates providing a great service to those of us who travel frugally to enable more traveling.

The hotel was originally a pensione serving pensioners, but slowly converted to a hotel. We went from mismatched furniture to entire bedroom suites (I cannot forget the red enameled iron headboard from our first visit). Breakfasts have gone from the typical Italian coffee and rolls to mini sandwiches, pastries, fruit, yogurt, and juices along with cereal. Since we usually travel in either May or September I can easily track the cost of the double rooms over the past 10 years and and they haven't changed more than about 5 euro. I cannot remember our original lira price, but it was under $100 at the time and since the euro was supposed to be on par with the dollar when it came into common use (Oh if only!) a 95 euro price seems very good. Indeed it is, since one can seldom find a hotel in Europe for under 100 euros even in the sketchy backwaters of the train stations.

If you don't know what to do with yourself in Bologna, go to the main piazza with the Fontana Nettuno and start there. It's only a block form the hotel (a hotel off the piazza will cost twice the price of Centrale). Have a drink and watch the city walk by, then try one of the municipal museums. Go shopping, the prices are much better than you will find in the major cities. Best of all go dining. Bologna is truly the epicenter of gastronomy in Italy. Ristorante Da Nello is in the small alley (Via Montegrappa) just behind McDonalds (from the sublime to the riduculous). Ristorante Diana on Via Independenza (the main street leading to the train station from town) has an international reputation for fine dining. Try the Lasagne Verde Bolognese at both and argue as to which makes the best! Best of all take a day trip to Parma, Modena, or even Florence (under an hour). Bologna is a wonderful city to use as a home base for daytrips and Albergo Centrale makes it the most affordable.

Great central location, spacious and well maintained room. Nothing fancy, but entirely pleasant and really a deal considering it was much less expensive than comparably located hotels. When we first arrived we thought our room had no natural light, then we figured out how to raise the external shade and it was fine!

Some of the staff speaks English well, some speak fairly limited English, so your ability to get help in English will depend on who's at the desk. Breakfast included pastries/rolls, cheese, and sometimes ham/salami (sometimes they ran out of this).

Although there is an elevator, not all of the rooms are reachable by elevator. We were not able to get help with our luggage when we arrived, and had to carry our suitcases up a flight of stairs. If this is an issue for you, tell them when you reserve that you need one of the elevator-accessible rooms.

Have just returned from a multi-centre holiday in Italy which started in Bologna, followed by Venice and Tuscany. Bologna was a pleasant surprise and the location of the Hotel Centrale was excellent - close to the main square and handy for the station and all the main sightseeing attractions. The room we had was a good size, basic but clean; the staff were helpful; breakfast was always good. All we could have asked for on the budget we were working to.
