The place was recommended to me by a local. It's in an artsy neighborhood near the University. In midday of a walking/museum tour I stopped for lunch to eat outdoors. It's your "standard" Italian indoor/outdoor restaurant which I happen to enjoy very much. The specialty is seafood. The lunch menu was not extensive but very interesting. i was struck by the continuous flow of local business people who came to eat - a number were turned away for lack of space. I had a spaghetti with calamari with olive oil, garlic and a perfect sprinkling (for me) of hot pepper. Just a delight. With a glass of the house white wine, water and some excellent bread, the cost was 13 euros. Would definitely go back, and might try dinner there the next time in Bologna. A few neighbor customers had the whole grilled fish which looked exquisite. From the way they downed it the taste matched the look.

i visited sale grosso after 14 months again for dinner. lighting was stronger than before and place looks better. at my first visit they told me that they were new and still waiting for an english menu. i seems like they decided not to use a menu in english. at least they try to explain the dishes in english. i ordered octopus as antipasti, spaghetti with anchovies and a fish soup which i don't remember the name in italian. antipasti was delicious, spaghetti was not special and the fish soup at the end is nice cooked and served. at the end i tried cannoli. they prepared it as small pieces to eat easier i believe. but there was a problem. if you cook it in small pieces using the same dough (same thikness with original size), the ratio of dough/filling is changed. therefore dough taste in general is stronger comparing to the original sized cannoli. so, meals were very good but this time the problem is the price. portions are not big, they don' t serve big amount of sea food but i paid for this menu with two glasses of wine more than 60 eur. this is the highest amount i paid for sea food in bologna. ok there are more expensive places but this price is high for sale grosso.

I went for the 1st time in this small restaurant in the Univerity area and I was surprised from the quality of fish and the way they cooked the fish, absolutely new to me.
The 2 appetizers with squids and octopus were absolutely delicious, the pasta with sea urchin is something difficult to find in a restaurant, at least in Bologna or emilia Romagna, and was really god, the raw tuna and shrimps with different dippings so fresh and good...it has been just a pity not to have anymore space for the dessert!

We really enjoyed our dinner at this restaurant. I had a pasta with sardines- typical for sicily and as tasty as in Sicily! My husband had a seafood risotto, he says it was possibly one of the best in his life. As a desert we had a chestnut creme, again excellent! You can't go wrong by eating here. We also noticed that the restaurant was full of locals and very popular.

Near the university district. Small, seats about 24. Serves lunch and dinner and seems to be popular with university professors and staff during lunch. We had three fish meals all cooked just right with vegetables. Also the raw fish for appetizer was wonderful. Too much food for desert.
