I stayed at Hotel Touring in the second week August which apparently was not the best time as most of the locals close shop and head for the beach! As a solo female traveller safety, location and cleanliness are my top three requirements. The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore and the other major sites. There's a bus stop a few metres from the hotel and plenty of restaurants around (however these were closed for the holidays). Stazione Centrale is a 20 minute walk and very doable in nice weather.
I was given an upgrade to a superior room which was greatly appreciated. The room and bathroom were extremely well kept and clean. I think each room has a different city 'theme' I got the Berlin room. Loved the wooden floors!
The morning buffet breakfast was really good with everything from cereal, cold cuts, hot food, pastries and beverages! Everyone at the hotel (like all Italians) were very friendly and helpful. They have a lovely rooftop bar with a beautiful view of the city, not a large selection of food but they had Lasagna and local wine which was all I needed! There's a gelato shop about two minutes from the hotel (past basilica San Dominco and opposite the park) which was a perfect end to my holiday!More
