“Run-of-the-mill”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

We stayed at the Novotel Fiera hotel in Bologna for five nights in July. Novotel is a chain. Everybody knows that and chains do what they are known for: they reproduce identical rooms all over the planet. You get the same bed, the same bed linen, the same paintings, the same sofa, the same sink etcetera everywhere you go. This can be reassuring to some but inevitably results in being very impersonal. Novotel is no exception to this. The room we got after checking in lived up to all its cliché expectations. We’d seen it all before. On the other hand the room was clean and functional and spacious enough to be pleasant. Expect basically a room with all modern mod-cons but don’t expect a whow! The room was sufficiently quiet with good sound-proofing and a thick sound-proof door. Wifi was free of charge and of good quality. The rooms also had a mini-minibar (meaning only basic stock). The hotel is located right by the congress center of Bologna by the tangenziale road of Bologna. From the airport it’s exit 8 direction San Lazarro that brings you there. The surrounding area is a business area and this also seems to go for the flesh trade. Some ‘ladies of the night’ were displaying their wares at various times of the day and night near the hotel. Despite the less than idyllic surroundings we did not feel unsafe however. The hotel has ample parking space and it also has a nice reasonably sized pool. Some tables and chairs are scattered around the pool but it’s a pity that none were the lounge type where you could consider taking an aperitif in the evenings. A drawback was too that all of the seating area was exposed to the open sun. Nice when you want to sunbathe but not so nice when you want to read a book. The public space is where this hotel veered away from the impersonal. The lobby and dining/breakfast areas were very pleasant, spacious and bright thanks to the natural light abundantly streaming in through the tall windows. The textile used for the sofas was however very coarse and unpleasant to the touch – a pity. Quite a few of the seats were also smudged. The staff were not friendly but also not unfriendly: they were just unremarkable and this went for the staff at the bar, the restaurant and reception. The lobby has two iMac computers with free internet access. A printer is also available (no cost). There is a nice play area for children (with a Wii). Since the hotel caters to business travelers a lot of meetings were being held during our stay. Breakfast was rather middle of the road. I would not necessarily pay 15 EUR pp for it. However since it was included in our rate we had breakfast in the morning. Expect the regular: cereals, a (limited) savory range, a (more extensive) sweet range, some fruits and the inevitable classic of many a hotel breakfast: overcooked omelet and greasy bacon. Some yoghurts were available and a limited range of juices as well. We also had lunch at the hotel. We shared a few slices of industrially pressed octopus as an antipasta and two plates of uninspiring tortellini. We paid around 40 euros for this. Not cheap: better drive into Bologna and eat better for less. One more thing: the location is great if you plan to explore the surrounding area (Parma, Modena, Ravenna,…) but without a car this hotel may not be the best option. There are no dinner or lunch alternatives at walking distance and Bologna center is around a 15 minute drive. All in all: a decent Novotel – nothing surprising but with nice public spaces. Run-of-the-mill.

Very strange hotel. Modern infrastructure, pleasant rooms [despite a water leak], nice lobby- but most hotel services seem shambolic, few experienced staff, new staff under-trained, unsupervised and dispirited and in particular the restaurant very poor [and expensive- not a good combination!]

Some examples:
Reception check in, seemed like unsupervised new staff not knowing what they were doing. Report of a room leak resulted in much flapping around and uncertainty
Restaurant- again seemed new untrained staff- what glass to pour wine in, how much to pour, forgot a course arrived 10 mins late, tables not cleared. But most of all very poor, expensive food. 20 euro burger, 6 Euro bottled beer, club sandwich with just sliced meat and cheese no toasted bread in middle so totally soggy; carbonara used 'liquid egg' just horrid.
Breakfast- arrived and probably 75% of tables had dirty dishes with no one responsible for clearing them apparently; no cheese, bread run out and no one checking.

Someone needs to get a grip of basically a nice hotel. [strange as before and after this hotel I stayed in some very professional managed Ibis hotels, with bright, professional staff].

my family and i stayed here and we simply had a great visit.... there was a lovely little park, great pool, computer games etc all supplied free of charge which came in handly when the heat of the day became too much! the staff were very friendly but still very efficient. prices to eat and drink were quite high but that, as we found out, is just the way it is in Italy..... we only stayed there for three days before heading north but we loved it and would certainly love to revisit.

Novotel is quickly becoming our new favourite place to stay. This was no exception. It is outside the center but that was fine for us. After spending the entire day exploring, it was wonderful to check in to this beautiful hotel. The staff was very friendly and our room beautiful! We quickly changed and headed to the pool to relax. They also had ping pong and foozeball. The lobby is kids paradise with a kinnex game system and internet options. Breakfast was delicious.

The hotel is quite good, it's clean, the rooms are well equiped and new, the breakfast is ok. There is a nice swimming pool, quite large for a hotel pool, and in addition there are a table tennis, a kicker, and a gym with some running and weight equipment. All this for a reasonable price. Only the dinner is quite expensive.
On the minus-side, however, there is the location: far away from the interesting places in the old town, no shops, no restaurants in the near. If you walk to the city, you may face some prostitutes waiting for car drivers...

Located in a very deserted part of town, but nevertheless easy to get to by taxi. The staff did make a good effort and were very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, I had a laundry list of problems during my 2 night stay here.

Major issues:
The air conditioner did not work properly at night, leaving the room extremely hot.
The design of the room was also poor, the bathroom door opened directly in front of the bed making it quite awkward to move around.
There was also a series of pipe leaks causing light flooding in the bathroom, which I have detailed in the attached photos.

Minor issues:
Cups for tea and coffee were not replaced by housekeeping
Coffee / Teabags were also not replaced
Only one set of towels in the room, had to wait over an hour for housekeeping to bring up a second set
Despite having Accor status, no welcome drink was provided

Other things travelers should be aware of:
You need a car or taxi to get here, public transport won't do it
Pool is not heated, during my stay it was far too cold for swimming (June)

It is a good location if you're planning to be at the Fiera. Otherwise, I would probably steer clear of this hotel based solely on the experience that I had.
