“Well presented galleries”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

These spacious galleries contain a small number of items from the permanent collection. Also a commissioned and very boring video installation "In Ritorno". The Morandi collection is the principal reason to visit with a well presented number of his characteristic still life pictures, a smaller number of landscapes and a variety of drawings and interpretive panels. Well worth the visit.
The temporary exhibition was interesting and fun and E6 admission keeps the place going in part. Nick van Woert: Nature Calls.
If you like modern art this is a good venue - if not you won't enjoy it. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The ticket girl is employed to speak incessantly on the phone should you ask!

“Good Italian modern art”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

MAMbo showcases many pieces of Italian modern/contemporary art and it is a large and decent collection that can be viewed in a couple of hours.

I was pretty excited about going to visit MAMbo, but felt rather disappointed when I got there. The permanent collection is very small and -- in my mind -- rather unimpressive. It focusses exclusively on Italian modern art, and also also only on a narrow time period. The special exhibition that was there while I was visiting was much better, though. All in all, I would not really recommend it.

“Some bad experiences”
Reviewed 21 July 2013

I would only half way recommend this museum for its art collection but the bad experiences I had there go beyond that. First of all, a guard felt that making lewd passes at me (suggestive looks, tone of voice, attracting my attention to something) was an ok use of his position. I felt very intimidated and appalled and emailed direction about it. Also, as another commentator mentioned, there seems to be more guards than visitors and I suppose to justify this, they ask you for your ticket in different checkpoints. Having lost mine, I had to go to the front desk with a guard (not the previously mentioned, this happened before) who at least apologized later on, after confirming I was not stealing my way in. It is his job, no doubt, but a museum that size could control tickets just once and spare people the embarassment. Really a bad experience.

“Worth an hour or two, but only if you are already interested in modern art”
Reviewed 12 July 2013

The lower gallery is has exhibits appearing for limited duration. When I visited, it was a focus on female artists and there were some very nice pieces. Overall, very good. The upper floors are the permanent collection and that part was also very good, but too limited and not substantial enough to be excellent. But it is a fairly new museum with time to find an important niche. The location is a reasonable walk from the center and accessible by bus, but the immediate neighborhood is pretty industrial/residential and lacks tourist amenities. You won't love it unless you are already interested in modern art.
