This is my second trip to Bologna for a conference (travelling alone) and I think that this is the best restaurant that I have found. It is not fancy, and it is not at all pretentious. The decor includes red checkered table cloths and the framed front pages of several newspapers extolling various soccer triumphs by the Azzurri and the local Bologna side. The food is simple, authentic and very well prepared. Wine is served in carafes, with small “cantina” style glasses (the same for the wine as for the water ... and I think that they do have one or two wines available by the bottle). This trip, I had the grilled vegetables two nights in a row – just a few pieces of zucchini, eggplant and endive ... but with the olive oil, salt and pepper that is brought to the table they were excellent. The first night I had the Passatelo Estivo (fresh pasta made with egg and cheese, with cooked ham, arugula and lemon rind) which was an absolute revelation, and the second night I had the Tagliatelle al Ragu (the world famous “Bolognese” meat sauce) which was exactly what it was supposed to be; spectacular. I would (will) go back. I would (will) bring my family. I would bring friends or business associates. This is the closest thing to a stereotypical Italian home cooked meal that you are likely to find in a restaurant ... anywhere.
