“Great location and friendly staff”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

Hubby and I stayed there for a week last year. We were new (and moving) to the area and this was a great location. The courtyard was beautiful and the hotel is located near the duomo (so in the city center) and near a large park. The staff was very friendly and breakfast was wonderful. Walking distance to tons of great restaurants. The room and bathroom were clean and nicely decorated. The room was a good size for Italy. Most of the staff spoke English but all understood it. I highly recommend it. The murals and paintings were very nice.

Stayed here for my 50th birthday, and we had a wonderful time. This hotel is full of character, with friendly, helpful staff and immaculately maintained rooms. You can eat at their own restaurant, or explore the many fine eateries nearby.

Relaxing with a drink prior to an evening in the salon is recommended. The old streets around Corso Canalgrande are great to explore, and the hotel is a stones throw from the shopping in Via Emilia.

The breakfast in the hotel is also a delight. Highly recommend a stay here.

Best wishes to Luca and his team.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the garden to the rear

Traditional hotel not in the first flush or mad youth with excellent service standards. Modena is a nice city to stroll around and this hotel is well placed to do just that. breakfast was highlighted by simply brilliant ham. So close to parma it had to be! A real treat

Definitely go back.

Room Tip: Eat in the stolen bucket. Exceptional!!!

We stayed here 2 nights to explore Modena which has a good atmosphere and plenty of interest. The hotel atmosphere however is austere by modern standards but the beautifully adorned bedroom and adjoining bathroom were perfectly acceptable and stocked to a reasonable standard. There is a patio and garden; breakfasts were mediocre and taken indoors. It has to be borne in mind that grand hotels are not usually found in smaller Italian towns so I would say that this hotel is entirely satisfactory for a 2 or even 3 night stay. Modena is realty interesting for architecture, art and museums. We enjoyed the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari from where there is the option of visiting the Museo Ferrari in Maranello which we did not do.

The hotel recommended for dinner Caffe Concerto in the Piazza Grande; this is absolutely excellent. Comprehensive dining out in Italy is generally expensive but the high standard of service, ambience, food and wine made the cost acceptable in the local context. We could find anywhere particularly recommendable for lunch.

Modena is a great place to visit for 2-3 nights; the Canalgrande is a good base

An instant wow as you enter the building, high, painted ceilings and huge oil paintings on the walls in the foyer and the various lounge and breakfast rooms. We were greeted and checked-in by a friendly efficient manager in perfect English, some other staff members spoke very little English, but with our few words of Italian and helpfulness on all sides we never had a problem. The room was delighful, again in authentic old style but pleasantly renovated, overlooking the terrace and gardens. The breakfast buffet was very good for Italy and the charming lady in charge of it happily got us a refill of coffee. Baggage storage and a taxi when we left were swiftly dealt with, location is perfect a few minutes walk from the main square, all in all a great place to stay, we would certainly choose this again in Modena.

One comment, there is some confusion with the English translation on the website with reference to rooms with terrace. They are in fact rooms with terrace/garden view as no rooms in the hotel actually have their own balcony or terrace.

A tip for others flying in to Bologna airport, we wanted the easiest transfer possible to the hotel, so asked the hotel to help and they arranged a limousine transfer for us. This worked perfectly, the driver was at arrivals to meet us, his spotless, very comfortable vehicle was parked just outside and he drove us very comfortably to the hotel. At a price of €75 we considered this good value rather than waste time on buses or trains and taxis in 40C heat.

A grand hotel built within a former palace. Spacious rooms looking out upon a courtyard.. The staff is always helpful. I met the owner and had several excellent conversations with him.
There is a restaurant on the property individually owned, which has a Ferrari race car theme. Excellent food. The hotel breakfast buffet is fantastic and the morning staff quickly replenishes coffee as needed.

Room Tip: ask for one on the courtyard.
