Description: The atmosphere is as sophisticated as an old 40's black and white movie, but at the same time, as inviting, creative and warm as a contemporary New York restaurant. The cuisine, with meat and fish specialities, is characterised by a tradition which has been reinterpreted in an exquisitely creative manner. In addition to the air-conditioned interiors, in summertime one can dine on the outside terrace. The Owner, Sante Milandri has been a restaurant owner since 1982. In 1998 he left "Bistrot Clardge" in Cesenatico (one of the first restaurants on the Riviera to focus on a refined clientele, as well as a younger one) and he moved to Ravenna where he set up the Spasso Bistro. The interior designer and co-owner of the Alexander restaurant carried out the refurbishment work in full respect of the history of the building. The first reports dating back to 1840 when it was used as a residence and later like restaurant. The seating capacity is sixty in what was once the stalls and a further forty seats are available in the circle.

“good fun, good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2013

The Cinema Alexander is at the edge of the old town in Ravenna. Dodging bicyclists along the pedestrian friendly streets, the walk from our hotel took about 15 minutes. The building was apparently an old cinema that was converted to a restaurant although they still show films on the wall. There’s lots of whimsical décor including a chair shaped like a face.

When in doubt have a glass of prosecco…that’s our new motto. The menu has an abundance of interesting dishes and we find it difficult to choose. After we order, we’re brought a chef compliment…our first in Italy (after a week and a half). It’s pureed aubergine, breaded, shaped into a square and fried; served with a creamy cauliflower sauce it portends good thing to come.

We decided to share an antipasto of beef tartare;. we said that we would split it ourselves but they brought it on two plates. It was topped with a dollop of mustard cream and was surrounded by a sweet tomato sauce. Excellent.

The menu had lots of interesting choices. If pasta and pizza is what you crave, don’t come here. We tried the angler fish with an almond cream sauce. It (mouth) feels and tastes a lot like lobster. Definitely an experience. The glass of white wine recommended by the waiter was a miss. If you like your bird gamey, the roast pigeon would be your cup of tea. Served on lightly sautéed spinach with a side order of roasted potatoes (side orders are big in Italy), it was my cup of tea.

The waiter who provided excellent service and spoke excellent English recommended the chocolate pie for dolce. A trifle on the uber-rich side for me, but the wife enjoyed it.
Definitely well worth the walk from the center of town.

“So good, we went back twice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2013

We tried this restaurant on our second night in Ravenna. It was so good, we went back twice. We were not disappointed either time. Consistently fantastic. The other reason we returned and would have done so more had time permitted is that the menu had so many wonderful things...the gamberi crudo di Mazara, the piccione, the carpacio of fillet of suckling pigand yet I could have had half a dozen wonderful, interesting meals off that menu.

“A great place for dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2013 via mobile

We experienced this restaurant during a special event consisting on a menu with Sangiovese wine tasting. Great evening with very tasting food and excellent service by the staff and the owners. This 5 service menu was offered for a very attractive price below 40 €.
The place is definitely worth the money and we would certainly chose it for a next stay in Ravenna.

“A wonderful experience, almost perfect”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2013

The wait staff was so smiley, and helpful. They worked hard. The atmosphere was very fun. The food was great. Keep in mind that is a candlelight dinner, with expensive wine, but still reasonable prices! Here was our problem: The management was allowing other guests' children to run around and scream and make noise, which completely killed the mood and atmosphere they worked so hard to create. We simply drew the short straw that night. I imagine it would be spectacular without rude parents.

“Superb food at an affordable price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2013

We dined here twice during our trip to Ravenna in April 2013 and found it to be a wonderful restaurant with superb food of at an affordable price. The waitress who served us spoke excellent English and was very accommodating to our requests, serving us a large shared salad as a starter, and anticipating our tastes the second time we dined there. Although my preference is for savoury dishes - and there were excellent choices on offer for both vegetarians and pescetarians - I was tempted by the wonderfully light and imaginative desserts here, sharing my husband's dessert one night, and then ordering my own finale to the meal on the second visit. There are discounts for Bed and Breakfast clients at this restaurant, but we didn't use our discount leaflet, thinking that the meal already represented very good value for its quality. On the second visit, however, we were spontaneously offered a discount for being valued and regular customers! We were charmed both by the flavours and presentation of the food, and by the warmth and hospitality of the staff. We will certainly return here if we visit Ravenna again.
