The Cinema Alexander is at the edge of the old town in Ravenna. Dodging bicyclists along the pedestrian friendly streets, the walk from our hotel took about 15 minutes. The building was apparently an old cinema that was converted to a restaurant although they still show films on the wall. There’s lots of whimsical décor including a chair shaped like a face.
When in doubt have a glass of prosecco…that’s our new motto. The menu has an abundance of interesting dishes and we find it difficult to choose. After we order, we’re brought a chef compliment…our first in Italy (after a week and a half). It’s pureed aubergine, breaded, shaped into a square and fried; served with a creamy cauliflower sauce it portends good thing to come.
We decided to share an antipasto of beef tartare;. we said that we would split it ourselves but they brought it on two plates. It was topped with a dollop of mustard cream and was surrounded by a sweet tomato sauce. Excellent.
The menu had lots of interesting choices. If pasta and pizza is what you crave, don’t come here. We tried the angler fish with an almond cream sauce. It (mouth) feels and tastes a lot like lobster. Definitely an experience. The glass of white wine recommended by the waiter was a miss. If you like your bird gamey, the roast pigeon would be your cup of tea. Served on lightly sautéed spinach with a side order of roasted potatoes (side orders are big in Italy), it was my cup of tea.
The waiter who provided excellent service and spoke excellent English recommended the chocolate pie for dolce. A trifle on the uber-rich side for me, but the wife enjoyed it.
Definitely well worth the walk from the center of town.
