More gorgeous mosaics. You will need a guidebook or knowledgable person to explain to explain their history and meaning.

The external side is very interesting due to its architecture, typical of Ravenna (the campanary, for example). The interior is splendid with the columns and the mosaics.

Make sure you have some details or a guide to explain what you are seeing. The most interesting part to me was seeing what was modified over the years as the rulers changed. Without the information it would be beautiful but knowing the history makes it more interesting.

This is one of the first mosaic stops on the tour ticket if coming from the train station. It turned out to be one of our longest stops. And, we were so glad we had booked a guide to be with us. Yes, the mosaics are grand and breathtaking. But, as she explained, they were meant to tell a story or send a message to common folks. She brought these portrayals to life. Gave them names. She used a lighted pointer to point out tiny interesting things that a normal tourist would not pick up on their own when gazing way up at the mosaic pictures. She also showed us many changes that had been made over the years and explained why the changes, cover ups, and alterations had been ordered as the leadership in the churches changed. Made it all very interesting on top of being beautiful.

The beauty of the mosaics could never be anticipated by the plain exterior of the church. This one is easy to find as it is on a main drag in the city, and it's included on a ticket you can purchase that allows access to four churches with mosaics. It's amazing how well-preserved the colors are!
