I loved this place! It was a bit chaotic popping at a busy lunch spot where much ordering of panini and quaffing of beverages was happening quickly and boisterously, but we found a table, and had cheerful assistance from a waiter who spoke fluent English and smiled at our attempts to speak Italian - it is good to try! The result was a plate of five delicious, juicy meats: tongue, cheek, porcina, cotechino, and pancetta. Wonderful! Next time, I'm just bellying up to the counter like the local business folk and ordering a couple of panini to go.

Da Pepi is a Triestino institution, a temple of all things porcine, and a vegetarian's nightmare. Its simple dated decor, off hand service and reek of pork fat and sauerkraut are more evocative of its Austrian past than its present day Italian location. Borders come and go, but da Pepi's still serves pork and beer to the people of Trieste (Italian, Slovene or German) as it has for over a hundred years.
It's not particularly cheap, 11 euros for 2 pork panini and 2 small beers, but a hot, filling snack when the bora is blowing outside. There are often tourists sitting down to a big plate of pig offel and sauerkraut, while locals tend to pop in for a quick panino and beer whilst standing up at the bar. We always opt for the same thing on our frequent cross-border raids, due panini con porcina e due piccole birre rosse.

This is a Trieste tradition located just off Borsa square where the Russian American and British sectors of the city met when it was an international administered zone after WW!!.

The food is simple being all parts of a pig prepared and cooked on a large griddle plate. The thing to order is a Piatto Misto. A mixed plate which comes with saurkraut and bread. The meats are delicious and succulent a real greasy chin job. Drink a stein of beer or a glass of local medium wine.

At busy times you may have to wait for a table this place is always full. But being there and being seen and seeing others is all part of the tradition.

Once inside the place justs wreaks of atmosphere and intrigue of all the meetings, assignations deals and conspiracies that have gone on here over the last century. It is just so much fun to seat and eat and pretend that you are having a clandestine meeting with your Eastern Block agent.

FAbulous palce, great simple and inexpensive dining for lunch or informal evening meal and totally entertaining fun.

This is a local restaurant serving all the sorts of boiled meats that were introduced whilst Trieste was part of the Austro Hungarian empire. So its definitely not the Italian cuisine that you would normally expect to find in Italy. They just don't do the pasta/primo/secondo/ etc. routine.

The food was fine - if you like boiled meat and sauerkraut etc. The whole Germanic food tradition. The food and wine were both reasonable value for money. There was a buzz about the place - lots of locals passing through for a quick meal.

It wasn't expensive, There are no pretensions at gourmet cooking. But it was a very interesting experience and a cuisine that I hadn't encountered before in Italy.
