“The last vestiges of a fading glory”
Reviewed 19 February 2014

I have looked at other reviews and see that most visitors are Italian and that the greatest number of 5 star reviews are English. I suppose that is because Trieste is somewhat off the tourist route and also because the Italian customer is more demanding and/or knows his/her coffee better.
The café is physically very imposing. It is large , well furnished and has an atmosphere. The location is great, in the most beautifully proportioned square, which you have to imagine at the height of Trieste's importance, probably in the early years of the 19th century.
The waiters were well turned out in clean white jackets, always nice to see they have gone to some effort. The coffee was OK and the cakes, though we did not partake, looked very attractive.
It was all in all a pleasant way to spend a hour on a cold, sunny February day.

“The Hot Chocolate!!”
Reviewed 16 February 2014 via mobile

So complex and different! This is a place to visit because of its longevity, and the coffee was very good, but the hot chocolate was serious! I think it might take a couple dozen visits to more fully comprehend this unique beverage. It was unlike any of the fine European chocolates I have enjoyed.

“Cafe deli specchi”
Reviewed 15 February 2014

We enjoyed the wonderful view and food while relaxing during our tour of beautiful Trieste! The awning provided shade while we took in the delicacies and scenery. It is so wonderful to see the owner of this restaurant interact with the customers, serve food, adjust the awning, etc. We hope to return in the future.
Much success to our new friend, Guiseppe!

“Old style as in... Good!”

We sat down and absorbed all 'the beauty' there was around... then we moved to the 'savory' ... patisserie is exquisite... and hot chocolate with cream a delight. I would come everyday!

“Why the Pulsating American Pop Music in Such a Lovely Spot?”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

The autumn afternoon was sunny with a slight chill in the air as we strolled across the Piazza to this much-acclaimed café. Mine is not a review of our late afternoon sandwich which was mediocre and expensive; it is a review of ambience and service.

We were seated outside. The slow service from an indifferent waiter gave me time to be ever more annoyed by the loud American disco tunes piped through several speakers. Now remember that we were seated on the cobbles of the beautiful Piazza Unità d´Italia with sweeping views of the Triestine architecture and the Adriatic. Why on earth would management lower the prestige of this lovely spot and compromise the vistas with blaring, outdated American songs? To his credit, I asked that the music be lowered and the manager complied, but it was still audible, rankling. Ironically, all the patrons at this time of day were 40 or older, not exactly a disco-loving demographic! As we waited and waited after asking for our check, I wondered what Jan Morris would think of the café now.

Owners, don't be tone deaf to your patrons. If you must have music, try something less grating, or here is a concept for you: eliminate the music and let the setting speak for itself!
