“Unusual B & B Great Location”
Reviewed 7 June 2012

Located up many stairs in old building opposite the waterfront so easy to walk everywhere. Private parking was advertised, not so, when we arrived on a Saturday the place was packed as a cruise ship in plus festivities so parking was a problem, later that night we were able to move to public carpark opposite. The room was huge and airy, lots of odd bits and pieces everywhere, NO lock on our door which was a concern. Bathroom is down the hall private and robes provided. The housekeeper was the only person we saw and no English so were able to speak to Marcello by phone only. Value is good for a city and Trieste is beautiful.

For two reasons this B&B is very peculiar:
At first it has the most client oriented owner (Marcello) I ever met in a B&B.
Secondly, by its design, it is as if you are staying in an antique shop. Below I will tell you more.
The B&B is extremely well situated on a square in the centre of Trieste. The square itself lies on a very busy road, with a bus stop (line 8) to the train/bus station. A taxi is about €7,50. Leaving the B&B to the right you walk into the city centre whereas the small harbour is a 100 mtrs. to the left. It is surrounded by several small restaurants, of which Dierre, Via Torino 24, is very good. The Shanghai Chinese Restaurant next to the B&B is also excellent and very cheap. The B&B is situated on the second floor of a huge building, and can only be reached by climbing 5 staircases (68 steps). So the B&B is not appropriate for handicapped people. There are 3 rooms which feature a kind of antique furniture and parquet flooring. They all offer a seating area with a work desk, and a private external bathroom (ours was at the end of the corridor).
We occupied the room at the front of the building. Although Booking’s description states that you can enjoy the Adriatic Sea view from the room, this is a bit misleading. When you hang out of the window and look to the left you can have a glance of the harbour. The room is very large with a large linen cupboard, a clothing standard, and a more or less antique working desk. There is no fridge, no TV and no air-conditioner, which did not bother us at all (we stayed in May for 5 nights). There is a large box spring bed. Alas, the mattress is very hard, which made for many of sleepless hours. The third night we solved this problem by putting one of the long pillows in bed and to slept on that. The second problem is the streetnoise. The room is not soundproofed, despite the fact that each window has double glazing. So bring your earplugs with you, if you are a light sleeper. These are the only two really negative points of this otherwise marvelous room. For each person there is a dressing gown and slippers, which can be used when going to the bathroom. The bathroom has a perfect shower (no bath tub) and a wash stand. There is a radiator on which you can dry your towels. There is only liquid soap, but as soon as the owner noticed that I brought my own small piece of soap with me, he put a large one on the wash syand. Room and bathroom are impeccably clean; towels and sheets are changed every two nights.
This personal touch is also seen at breakfast. The night we arrived we were asked what we would have for breakfast, for instance eggs. Dutch people do associate this immediately with boiled eggs, which we do not like, so we declined. The next morning our breakfast was extremely poor with sweet bread, some rusks, etc. For the next morning we asked for some slices of bread and meat/cheese products and marmalade. From that moment on breakfast was great and Marcello tried to find out what we liked. I never ate such tasteful Gorgonzola, and when he offers you eggs, do accept this: you will get a kind of fried ‘pizza-eggs’ which is delicious. We stayed 5 nights and every morning we had a different breakfast.
Although we experienced some problems, we surely can recommend this B&B. We booked through booking.com and paid 80 euro a night, which is very acceptable.
Tip: visit The Revoltella Modern Art Museum which is 50 metres from the B&B.

This is a really beautiful and unique B&B which is fantastic value. The owner has restored this apartment and filled it with beautiful and interesting pieces. The location in Piazza Venezia is great, extremely central and right by the sea. The apartment itself is stunning, There is one double room which overlooks the piazza and one twin room. Both rooms are extremely large and elegantly furnished. The room where we had breakfast really was breathtaking. Breakfast included tea, coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, yoghurt, toast and pastries. The owner is very friendly and easy-going and it was a pleasure staying in his home. I would thoroughly recommend this B&B to anyone going to Trieste. It certainly is the best and most interesting B&B I've ever stayed in.
