We had 3 trips to Trieste in the past month and spent the first two at Hotel Alabarda. We chose Alabarda because of price (80E/nite) and generally favorable reviews on this site. See our very negative review for Hotel Alabarda. When we decided to find a new hotel for our 3rd trip we actually visited a number of hotels in the area between Hotel Alabarda and the train/bus depots. We inspected rooms and talked rates which were negotiable at most of the hotels. After that review we selected Hotel Impero at 90E/nite. We were very, very pleased with our stay there. Our double room was very clean and spacious and well lit, had a huge shower and bathroom, comfortable beds, nice furniture and fixtures. The lobby was attractive, we had a nice continental breakfast, internet access (3E/hour) is offered, and (importantly) Hotel Impero has charming and helpful, English speaking, front desk personnel. Finally, as noted by others, this is a great location about a block away from the train/bus stations. We enjoyed not having to haul our luggage through the streets of Trieste or having to catch a taxi.

This was the second time we have stayed at this Hotel after an excellent first up experience some three years ago. Unfortunately, our latest experience left a little to be desired, notwithstanding the fact the Hotel is an excellent location which is in close proximity to the Rail & Bus Station and rooms are basic but of a good size, extremely clean, with beds being a good quality.

The first issue we encountered was asking the girl on reception for restaurant details, only to find she really had no idea where the restaurant was located and sent us on a wild goose chase. The next morning we discovered that the hot water had run out by just after 9.00am, so cold showers were on offer. We then went and had what was a very ordinary breakfast (basically just breads and cereals), compounded by the fact that the woman running the restaurant had absolutely no customer service focus, by instantly removing all food the moment the clock reached 10.00am and refusing to offer top up coffee's after that time.

We then checked out and specifically asked the girl on reception to order a Maxi Taxi as there were four persons, hence a very large amount of luggage. Imagine our surprise, when a conventional small taxi arrived and we subsequently discovered the girl had totally disregarded our request.

Despite the negatives with our latest stay, would probably give the Hotel another chance bearing in mind our excellent experience three years earlier.

This is actually the second time i wrote a review for this hotel, the first was not published by trip adviser as i guess they deemed it too strongly worked. I never heard why?

Let me try a more Diplomatic Review; This hotel is in need of a major a renovation..

Rooms are old and very rough around the edges. Breakfast was barely one star, no choice of food and what there was was not particularly appetizing.

Normally i have found trip advisers well rated hotels great, this was not.

Once we found this place and somewhere to park we were impressed by the friendly staff and offer of 'valet parking' (i.e. someone parking our car in their car park). The room was basically a small apartment, which we weren't expecting, with a small kitchen, but it was clean and spacious. There were no real mod-cons, and it was functional rather than beautiful, but the central location, friendly staff, parking and cleanliness mean that I would return here in the future.

Reading reviews on different websites of this 19th century renovated hotel, I got the impression that perhaps it was one to avoid-well, having traveled all over the world for all of my adult life, I think I'm a pretty good judge of what is and is not acceptable for hotel rooms-and this one, particularly as I got it at a single rate, was IDEAL.

But before I get to the room, let me say, that the location of this hotel is not only just across and down from the train station and the bus station (which is how you go to Slovenia and Croatia-by bus-great day trips!) but it is within walking distance to the lovely Piazza d'Unita, the downtown sector, the boat docks (where you can take boat trips to the beach resort of Grado, or the picturesque fishing village of Muggia), the bus outside the hotel will take you to Trieste beaches, the lovely Hapsburg-built Villa Miramare, -it could not be more centrally located. There is an excellent little bar, and several local trattorias next to and within yards of the hotel, and if you need to buy something cheap, Chinatown is just around the corner-all sorts of bargains there!

But I was most pleasantly surprised by my lovely room-quite large, high-ceilinged-a double, elegantly furnished, with a LOVELY Murano glass chandelier, and the brand new sparkling white bathroom with large window was almost as large as some of the single rooms I have gotten in travels throughout Italy-it really was nice. I also looked in some other rooms, and they were equally tastefully furnished, with interesting local art on the walls-really, this hotel's guest rooms are far better than one would expect for a 3 star hotel!

The public reception area here, though small, is equally tastefully furnished with some antique pieces, there is an internet access, for a fee, and a Coke/water machine on the ground floor (however, as I said there is a bar that adjoins the hotel with all manner of cold drinks to buy, as well as alcohol).

The staff, although not overly knowledgeable about Trieste sights and timetables (that was okay, because there's plenty of brochures and the like), were very pleasant and tried to be helpful, which is important-no complaints there.

And then, there is the breakfast-one of the best I'd found in Italy for the room price-because there is NOT just the typical sweet roll coffee and juice-there was plain yoghurt, granola, fresh fruits, cheeses, meats, sweet rolls, cold juices, -you could have a cappucino for the asking-an excellent variety, served in a large open, light-filled breakfast room, (as opposed to some small cramped space where you can hear everyone eating) with more Triestino art on the walls (some of it for sale).

I loved Trieste, and REALLY liked this hotel-I would absolutely stay there again. Oh yes, and the rooms had good air conditioning, if that's what you lneed, as well as minibars with plenty of space.
