Medioeval Castle built under the Venetian dominion, overolooking the Roman sites and the harbor. Beautiful view of Trieste, a short walk from the shopping area in downtown.

The views, once you have climbed up the hill from the part and then the cobbled street, are spectacular, especially on a good day. You get a sense of both the Roman areas (you can go down the hill via these, winding through the old houses down the steps) and the modern area and the lie of the seashore. Inside you can see some things without paying, including the old bell with the two cast statues, but it you want to see more you have to pay. I'd recommend just seeing the views, and then going in to the Catedrale next door.

Beautiful mosaics, a lovely reliquary, the odd skull, and some great old school-pre mobile audio-guides make this unmissable. I did a raspberry beret on it I think, and walked in through the out door and didn't pay - not sure if I was meant to, but I lit a candle and paid to illuminate the mosaics to compensate. Anyone who likes them should hightail to Ravenna. The relics are as compelling as the mosaics, and it is worth going when you feel it might be quiet, as there is an atmosphere that dissipates immediately when a group comes in.

Oddly, my tourist map produced by the city of Trieste didn't even mention the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta! The church was originally two basilicae, side by side, one to St Giusto, one to Santa Maria, dating from the 13th century. The architecture has been little changed, but lovingly maintained -- two brilliant Byzantine mosaics, one in the apse, one in a side chapel; partial remains of a Roman tiled floor; frescoed polychrome arches; a surprisingly sensitive modern ambo. They haven't succumbed to electric candles (bless them!) so the interior is warmly lit and scented of beeswax. The church sits on the site of a Roman agora. Roman columns stand in a park next to the church, and a small well-preserved Roman amphitheater is a half block away.
