You get what you pay for. It is not the Grand Hotel, but for just having a room to sleep at a great location ( near the station) it is perfect. Clean and friendly staff. Only really bad thing: the pillows were hard as a rock. I never ever experienced such hard pillows in my whole life. I hade neck pain the next morning. Breakfast was OK but do not expect cold cuts, bacon or scrambled eggs. For the right price I would return again.

Man bekommt, was man zahlt.

Staff is very helpful.
Breakfast is amazing.
Location is pretty awesome too, about a 10-minute walk to the main Piazza.
The room was quite large and the beds very comfortable.

Room Tip: At breakfast, ask the staff to make you a cappuccino - they make delicious ones!

We stayed at the Hotel Colombia for 7 nights and what a wonderful cholce it was. The hotel is very close to the main railway station and a 15 minute walk from the Piazza Italia in the centre of the city. Our room was large compared to most hotel rooms in European cities and beautifully furnished.
The foyer of the hotel is very inviting too being furnished with some wonderful peices of modern art.
A very substantial continental breakfast is served.
I have no hesitation in recommending the hotel. .

To begin with, it is apparent from reading the previous comments - none earlier than 2008 - that the hotel has undergone a transformation. We arrived extremely early in the morning, much later than expected, after a dreadfully long drive and were greeted warmly by the night staff. The room was in a good state of decoration and clean. The bed was extremely comfortable and the pillows - although flatter than we are used to - very comfortable as well. The bathroom was well fitted out with sink, loo, bidet and a decent sized shower cubicle with an effective shower head. Breakfast was ample, with a lot of choice, including one or two changes in the food from day to day, which kept it interesting. The A/C was not as efficient as I would have hoped, given that the night temperatures were often in the high twenties. The hotel is close to the train and bus stations and a multi-storey car park - necessary if you have driven there, as there is restricted/resident parking in all the streets.

I would happily use this hotel again. I am aware of any pitfalls and they are not show stoppers.

For the price, there are much nicer and better located hotels in Trieste. Colombia has the potential to be so much better. It looks glamous on the exterior, but the interior is rather lacklustre. The interior decor is also confusing - it can't seem to decide if it's modern or traditional. Breakfast times were quite limited, as was the food. Our bathroom had a whirlpool tub, but it didn't work. The room was cramped with far too much furniture than was necessary. Service was non-existent. The lift was slow, would only fit 2 adults, and would take forever during peak times.

This clean, apparently family-owned hotel is a five-to-ten minutes easy walk from the train and inter-city bus terminal, and is convenient for sightseeing, shopping, and dining. We heard no street noise, though we were centrally located in a business district. It represents excellent value. Breakfast includes eggs, fruit, and yogurt in addition to the usual baked goods and beverages. When the air-conditioning didn't work in our standard room we were transferred graciously to a superior one and the staff even moved the luggage. (The difference between grades of room is primarily in the furniture bath cosmetics, some kind of jacuzzi-like implements in the bathtub, and an oriental-style rug over the carpeting.) There are friendly, helpful desk and cleaning and breakfast staff. We'd choose this hotel again and have no hesitation in recommending it to others. If you don't require sumptuous luxury (spas, massages, etc.) but you do need comfort, cleanliness, convenience, and a courteous staff, this is an excellent hotel to choose.

The most important factor for me was the vicinity of a train station. Hotel Colombia offers a pretty good location relative to the city center and the train station. Yet it is located in a very quiet street which is nice in a pretty busy city as Trieste.
Reception personnel was very friendly and tried their best to speak English. The staff at breakfast on the other hand were not that friendly.
While going to the breakfast buffet a second time, my plate was taken away. Key still on the table! And the breakfast room was not that big that I disappeared out of sight. Things like this are not allowed in a 4 star hotel if you ask me.

A nice little jazz tune at breakfast, design furniture in the lobby and a clean room. Those elements might make for a 4 star rating but that's it. In the bathroom I had to stand in the doorway to dry of after a shower...

The room (basic) had air conditioning and a tv (which did not work)
