Accommodation: we had booked the triple room for €89 but upon arrival at reception were told that our room was double booked. Apparently I was notified by email that there was a problem with my debit card a week after I received booking confirmation . This email must have gone to my junk mail as I wasn't aware of the cancelation. We were offered replacement accommodation for €120, a flat on the square. The receptionist said she could give it to us for €100 but for that we would get no extra bedding. From pure exhaustion we decided to take it. Of coarse there didn't seem to be any problem with my debit card when I used it to pay for this room. My husband slept On the sofa and myself and the kids in the double bed. Exhausted after our eighteen hour journey we put our heads down to sleep and within ten minutes extremely loud music from the bar downstairs began. So loud the flat shook. This went on for hours. Needless to say we didn't get any sleep.

Cleanliness: The fridge was full of gone off food and half drank bottles of wine and cola. There was a draw full of half eaten packages of food.

Location: We searched for over an hour through the streets of Trieste to find the place. We asked several locals who had never heard of the hotel. It is well enough located in terms of the port etc but finding the hotel is a problem as it is down an alley way with no signposting.

Breakfast: An ok breakfast served in a small dining area.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the flat in the square if you want any sleep.

Dear Nigrainne ,
Thank you for your recent visit to James Joyce Hotel.
As a much-valued guest your feedback is important to us as it does help us to improve the services and facilities we provide and I was therefore extremely concerned to read that we did not meet your expectations.
I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the disappointment you experienced with regards to the room that was allocated to you.
We would like to specify that the reservation for a triple room (of which we have only 1 throughout the hotel )was made through booking.com and you chose prepaid rate. We try to charge your credit card, but the transaction was refused. We reported the problem correctly in booking.com. Normally assistance from booking.com would have to send an email to advise her that the reservation would be canceled within 24 hours if you had not given a new credit card. Not the hotel's fault if he never received the email from booking.com. or that it came in his junk mail. For this reason we always advise to write directly to info@hoteljamesjoyce.com to book.
Sorry you had trouble finding the hotel, but on the page of booking.com is correctly indicated that check-in is done at the urban design hotel in via del forno 3.
Despite your reservation was canceled and the hotel running at full occupancy, we could have found a solution more suited to your needs: an apartment for residential use, as an alternative to our high availability to help you find accommodation in another hotel. We give lot of importance to our initial satisfaction check especially with newly arrived guests, trying to provide the best or alternative solutions. We understood no complains when the first two of you arrived and saw the rooms.
What we regret most is that you left the hotel without mentioning any of the problems that made your stay uncomfortable, because we could solicit local managers in the square cavana to reduce the audio and / or to clean the fridge the apartment.
We would like to welcome you again to make you change your mind. We wish you a good day.
Manuel

A very central hotel to just about everything in Trieste central city. Only metres walk to the main square. Very comfortable room that promised everything that was advertised. Breakfast was very good in the costy breakfast room. The only downside - if any, was I had programmed our GPS to find this particular street, which of course is pedestrian only. Use the address of the Urban Hotel if coming by car. Parking was easy on the street - just fed the meter for a few hours late in the day & then again first thing in the morning. Staff all very friendly and helpful.

We stayed at the James Joyce for one night in early August 2013 as a waystop coming from Croatia on our way to Bolzano. We had a great stay. The hotel staff, including the reception staff at the Urban Design hotel are super friendly. The rooms were nice and corresponded to the pictures posted online. There`s a little work to be done here and there in the bathrooms, but nothing that annoyed us or was a problem in any way. The rooms were stylish and comfortable. We came with four kids and had two rooms. It was no problem to share the beds with three people and again, very comfortable. As described in the other reviews, the breakfast area is tiny. It was full when we came down in the morning, so they just sent us over to have breakfast at the Urban Design hotel, which they said was the same. The breakfast was good, something for everyone, especially considering the price.
The greatest thing about the hotel is the location, you cannot get more central than that. Step out of the front door and walk to the Piazza della Unita literally in less than ninety seconds.
Parking is also not a problem. The staff seemed almost relieved that we did not want to use the Valet service. There is plenty of room outside the Urban Design Hotel to load and unload the car and get everything up to your room. It's then not a problem to find parking in the streets in the area, without too much walking. There's no charge for parking in the streets after 7 PM and it starts at eight or nine in the morning. I just walked out to the car in the morning after I got up and charged up the meter for the rest of the morming until noon, that will cost you about five bucks, not a big deal.
All in all a great stay, stylish rooms and a good price. Thanks.
Warning: There is a bar right outside the hotel. The drinks and food are good and it's a good place to pick up some food if you come late, but they stay open until midnight and play music loudly until then, which can be heard in all the rooms. There's also a lot of street noise. We enjoyed all this, but the hotel is not for light sleepers. This is the only reason I only gave three stars for sleep quality.

Great little hotel in fantastic location. Every body was very helpful - from the receptionist in the Urban Hotel where we checked in - up to the handy man who helped us with the closed safe. Thank you, we will come back!
Only litte downside - the walls are quite thin and the digital key makes a "hell of a noise" when entering the room!
