My mom and I are backpackers and we went into Cinque Terre, but many of the hostels were booked. Instead of staying directly in Cinque Terre we went to this wonderful town called Levanto which is not part of the original 5, but is equally as beautiful and has a large beach. It also has a free hiking trail from Levanto to Monterosso and is by far the most beautiful trail, but pack lots of sunscreen water and a hat because its quite the hike (3 hours). Definitely worth it, and the town can be reached by the same train that goes through Cinque Terre and is easily accesible. It had cheaper prices and wonderful places to eat.
Not many people outside of Europe know about Levanto but its a great place to visit.
*****THINGS TO KNOW****
---warning about one of the Cinque Terre towns, Corniglia, if you are taking the train to this town be prepared to climb a HUGE staircase up the mountain. Some people say its not a big deal but for us it takes at least 20 minutes and especially with heavy bags.
--Right now the roads between the second and third towns are closed due to landslides which we did not know and our GPS lead us there. We had no notification but we were able to use the train.

Room Tip: Rooms right in the center of Levanto tend to be louder

My wife and I rented an apartment with terrace overlooking Via Fieschi in the heart of Corniglia from Stefania Basso and stayed for a wonderful 8 days. The hourly bells of the church, the chatter of the residents from below, the view of the mountains...all made this apartment something to remember. It was clean, reasonably priced and had a great terrace where we loved to have breakfast each morning. The weather was perfect, the people charming and the hiking intense. This is NOT a place for fancy footwear. Sneakers or hiking books are a must. You must try the Acciuge con Limone while in the Cinque Terre. You'll be surprised. My wife hates "american" anchovies, but these were heaven. Access to the town is best by train. If you have luggage, take the park bus from the train station into town (5 minutes or less). With no luggage, it's a lot of fun to do the steps. The views alone are your reward. The exercise is just a bonus.
There were enough restaurants to try a different one every night of our stay. Lunches were in the other towns (Vernazza, Manarola, etc.). Never a disappointing meal.
The apartment was in a fabulous stone building that never failed to catch the eye of passers-by. It must be in every tourist's photo album.

we went to the cinque terre with my 9 month old and she developed a fever on the first day. Stefania went above and beyond to help us - even having her hubby get run an errand in another town.
everything we wanted in a self-contained apartment was there. it was clean, comfortable and it is hard not to be in the centre of town in Corniglia. we got lost at the start (hard to think in hindsight) and we mentioned Stefania's name to a local, the local called her and Stefania came and got us.
i am not a hotel afficianado and maybe do not see things like others. i do not care it does not have tv (some rooms do) or internet as disconnecting from these things is the reason we went. corniglia shuts down early so those who like to dine out may choose other of the 5 towns. those that want a more authentic experience pls choose Corniglia. it is not on the water hence most flock to Vernazza.
the one thing that was not ideal was the shower was not attached to the wall, and there was no shower curtain. but this does not mean i couldn't shower, water was hot and pressure good, it was just different to what i was used to. and i guess that is what travelling is all about.

A nice room in a great part of town. The owner, Stefania, is a charming woman with a great deal of local knowledge which she readily shared with us. The room was simple but handled our family of 4 and the kitchenette allowed us to cook dinner a couple of times. Since dinner out was always at least €100, the €85/night off-season rate was reasonable, and certainly less than most hotel rooms (plus we probably would've needed 2 hotel rooms).
Although Corniglia's location in the middle of the Cinque Terre is handy for going either direction to visit neighboring towns, the 400 foot climb from the train station was tiring. At the end of a day of hiking, the trip up the switchbacked stairs is tough for those of us beyond adolescence (the shuttle ran maybe hourly, but didn't always match up with our schedule). The other 4 towns are much closer to sea level. On the plus side, without the climbs I probably would've gained much more than 7 pounds I did gain in 10 days (much of the weight gain was from our time in Roma)!

  • Liked — Kitchen, and 4 beds.
  • Disliked — No internet. € 6 /hour at the cafe a few doors down.
