Nice stay in Manarola. Christina was good resource of places to hike. The owner was very nice. She even put up with my very poor Italian. The place was quiet and very clean. We had bought our tickets to go from Monterossa to Milan and I left them in the apartment. Well the owner brought it all the way to the train station which is a good distance from her place. I would not have known until we got to Monterossa. Thank you very much.

The room was extremely clean and the owners were very sweet, although they dont speak English but their daughter in law does all the translation you need. Quiet at night like the rest of Manarola. Excellent rooms with everything you need. The climb to the hotel will guarantee you muscles.

Downpoint was the WIFI kept cutting.

We enjoyed our little suite. Among the locals we felt like we were right in the middle of things. Loved the laundry line and the little kitchen area - we would have loved to have two plates and some napkins for when we dined in. The sound of the running water right outside the window is nice too. Word of caution, the hosts don't speak any English so checking in and out was a bit tricky but we were given comprehensive (and friendly) instructions in Italian (and the main contact, Christine, speaks very good English). We would definitely go back.

We stayed there only for sleep a night. It is very silent there. This is good because in downtown it is sometimes very loud. The walking distance to the beach is 10 minutes. We had the big room with a balcony to the road.

We stayed at Carugiu for five nights in July. The location was fine, near the top of a steep incline, but not a problem. The room was very small with hardly any room to open two small suitcases. It had a small fridge and table in the room, which made it quite crowded. There was a fan, but no air conditioning and it was warm at night. The room, however, was nice and clean! The owners do not speak any English, but their daughter in law, who owns a trekking shop nearby, speaks English and is very helpful about where to hike and can answer questions about the B & B. Overall, this is an okay place to stay in Manarola.

My husband and I stayed at Carugiu from 11-14 July 2013.

The walk up the hill from the train station is short, but boy, it's steep! Don't be like me and pack a 20 kg suitcase. What was I thinking?!

We stayed in the upper-floor apartment. This is a tiny, but modern and beautifully appointed space. However, be warned, the marble steps up to the door are nearly vertical. If you have limited mobility or are in anyway other than completely fit, you will struggle to get up these stairs. Even if you are fit and strong, carrying a large suitcase up them is difficult.

The apartment itself has three rooms: a bedroom (good size); a "kitchen" (tiny) and a bathroom (good). The "kitchen" has a microwave and tiny table; knives, spoons and forks; and wee fridge. No plates or bowls. There's no sink, or means to make your own cup of tea or coffee -- but there is a coffee machine just outside the door, for which coffee shot things are made freely available.

The website listing made us believe it was air-conditioned: it's not. There is a fan in the bedroom, but this is not air-conditioning. This means the kitchen area can get a bit hot. The window in the bedroom opens, and there's a door in the kitchen that opens out on to a tiny balcony that has a wee washing line. This proved invaluable after getting extremely hot and sweaty walking up and down the hills between the five villages. As long as you bring washing detergent with you, you can do a quick hand wash, then hang stuff on the little clothesline (a few pegs provided) and it's dry in the morning.

Breakfast is adequate, but very sugary and 'packaged' -- it's not a B&B like we know at home, where the host provides a home-cooked meal. It consisted of four pieces of "biscotti" (tiny pieces of bread, pre-toasted; one-serve packets of honey, jam and Nuttella (more than will fit on the toast); a sweet pastry item; yogurt; and a small carton of orange juice.

The host, Isobella, is retirement age and speaks no English, but we managed to communicate with our occasional word of Italian and a lot of hand gestures. If you do have communication difficulties, Isobella's daughter-in-law, Christine, is a native of Missouri and runs Cinque Terre Trekking -- a 5 minute walk from the accommodation. She is a wealth of information.

Manarola is a beautiful spot -- a far better place to stay than Riomaggiore. We spent a couple of hours there one morning and it is crammed full of tourists and tour groups. Sure, Manarola is busy, but it doesn't feel nearly as cramped. Swimming is available (off the rocks) but there's no beach. The water, however, is beautifully clean and clear.

Room Tip: Don't choose the top-floor apartment if stairs are an issue for you.

The host was friendly even though she could not speak English very well (we communicated through her daughter-in-law). The apartment is conveniently located near the Manorola train station, near the top of the hill. The room we had was at the basement of the house. It was clean, and smelled lovely. The room came with free wifi, a fridge, tv and we were also welcome to use the lavazza espresso machine in the house. Really loved Manarola village very much and enjoyed our stay here tremendously.
