“Expected more”
Reviewed 29 July 2011

We need to say that we expected more from Alla Porta Rosa. The room itself was really tight but clean and with sea view.
For someone looking to stay 16 hours visiting Cinque Terre and just want to sleep is OK.
But the service was really poor. And take care because this is not a B&B- Just a B (They don´t serve breakfast), just a bed!

We came to Porta Rossa after I search and read about many hotels to stay around. We stayed there for a week, and it was simply great. We had the room Rugiada Di Mare (I personally recommend Sapore Di Sole which is nicer as it has direct view to the sea and another window), It was beautifuly decorated, clean and comfy. One thing is, the owners give you the keys and show you around when you come, then you leave it on your last day, however, we tried to reach them during the week in different times to aske something and that was a bit difficult. The location in Manarola is excellent as it doesnt have many stairs to climb to get there and it's very quiet around. Staying in Manarola was awesome, the resturants around are the best, many trains stop by, great spirit! Would definitely be happy to come back and recommend others:)!!

Room Tip: I think the room Sapore the Sole is the nicest.

We stayed in the aqua verde room which is not yet on their website but is amazing. it is actually a small apartment with a full kitchen and living room area with a couch, table, and TV. No outdoor space but a magnificent view of the ocean. The room was quiet at night, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was fully equipped (just one note- the shower has a very high lip to climb over, not an issue for most people but if you have limited mobility this could be tough- then again, all of cinque terre will be tough if you have limited mobility!)... the woman who met us after the train ride to take us to our room was a sweetheart (wish I could remember her name) she was the italian grandmother everyone would want, doesn't speak a lick of english but with our minimal italian, we got along just fine. would absolutely return!!!

This place had a very romantic setting, perched on a cliff over the ocean, and you could hear the little Cinque Terre train rumble and beep in the mountain far beneath, which was kind of cool. But it did feel like they were charging whatever they wanted because they knew they could with that view. The irony was, in the room we had (I think it was called Raggio di Luna; the one that had an optional kitchen above, which you could pay extra for) the two view windows were narrow and long, less than a foot wide, like prison windows -- so you couldn't see the view much from the bed or anywhere else in the room. Not that there WAS much of anywhere else in the room, besides the bed. The space was tiny.

In the evening, we tried to leave the windows open for air and ocean sound, but within minutes, we were infested with these creepy flying beetles. Even when we turned the lights out, I looked at the small stereo console light, and saw the beetles swarming all over it. So much for a romantic evening! We spent most of the time killing beetles.

The deck was nice, above the room we were in, and Manarola is, to me, the nicest of the Cinque Terre towns -- the only one with easy swimming access, but when we tried to find out if there were extra towels, beach gear, etc., to check out, we had to deal with the father, Orfeo, in the office, who doesn't speak English and just said "no, no!" when I pointed at towels and said the word for beach. (He will definitely spend time to make sure you understand, however, when he is recommending restaurants; he even wrote them all down for us and told us to mention his name. None of them were in our guidebook, though, so we assumed he was just referred business to his pals, and we didn't go.) We were lucky to even find him in the "office" at all, though -- for the most part, once you get the keys to this place, you are on your own.

Overall, a sweet town and gorgeous setting means you'll pay a lot for a tiny room, no service, and flying beetles (at least in June -- you might get a beetle-free deal in other seasons!).

Dear guest, thank you for your comments. However, I am so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay completly. It's a pitty! Raggio di Luna can be very romantic: sea, sun, stars, moon, flowers... The room is not huge, you are right, just normal size... one of the window is long and not too large, but there is sea view both from the room itsself (not from the bed, correct!) and the bathroom. It's really sad to me to hear you did feel like in prison, oh no, there is a lovely outside space too and a comfortable deck high up above the sea: I am sure you had a good time there maybe drinking a good glass of local wine! And I am also very sorry for the "flying beetles" you mentioned. Regarding restaurants: we are used to give suggestions, just suggestions, believe me, we have no business with the suggested restaurants! My father, who does not speack English, wrote the name only to be helpful! :)

Tight use of space but very pleasant and ocean view was wonderful. Small balcony, could pull out a chair and read while looking over the ocean. Very conveniently situated in Manarola. A little ways up but minimal given that everything in Cinque Terra is a climb. No breadfast or Wi-Fi. If you drive, make sure you get a pass to drive your car down the hill into the city. Drive down to the "T" on the right side of the road, almost down to the piazza. Manarola is the best town in Cinque Terra. A dream visit.

This was the splurge portion of our trip to Italy, so no, this is not the most affordable place to stay. But we don't regret a single euro. The older gentleman who checked us in didn't speak much English, so be sure to have a few phrases ready to communicate. He seems a bit surly, but he's really very proud of his property, so be sure to tell him how lovely it is. :) We stayed in Creme Caramel, and we never wanted to leave. The room is right over the water and has the most amazing view of the sun setting along the coastline as well as the hilly farm region. There's a kitchenette, so be sure to go down to the markets on the main street and take advantage of the local agriculture to make a meal and sit out on the terrace in the sun.

Also be sure to check out Aristide and the Marina Piccola restaurants for their pesto or seafood dishes.

Everything about Cinque Terre stole our hearts; but especially Manarola, and especially our exquisite little "Rose Room" at Alla Porta Rosa. Breathtaking views of the sea from both the bed and outside on the small balcony. Sunwashed room with tiny table. Fully equipped bath. Artful use of small space. Spotlessly clean - and attention to detail, such as the rose and ivy petals artfully arranged on the bed for our arrival. Yes, there are stairs up to it. They intertwine on the paths among people's homes. Local residents sometimes play cards in the little square just below. Remains of the ancient gate are just outside. Charming. Our gracious host and her mother were wonderful and most helpful. We yearn to go back!
