“A very nice B & B”
Reviewed 28 October 2010

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Da Baranin. It is quite an uphill hike from the train station, but since we travel lightly it was not a problem for us. Upon arrival, we were shown to our room, which was adequately furnished and very clean. The bathroom had a hairdryer, and a nice shower. There is also a terrace which you can use to sit and relax anytime. The breakfast, which is included in the price, is very nice, with fresh breads, jams, etc. The friendly staff prepared our coffee as requested - a nice touch for Americans. We quickly learned in Italy that the bells of the local churches ring very early in the mornings, which was also the case in Manarola. The town of Manarola is wonderfully quaint and the views are beautiful and the place is generally quiet. Da Baranin is very close to Trattoria da Billy, an excellent restaurant. If I return to Manarola, I will definitely stay at Da Baranin again.

We stayed at Da Baranin for two nights in late September and couldn't have been happier with our accommodations. The duplex apartment was exactly as described and pictured on the website. While the decor was simple, everything was spotlessly clean. After our hike up the hill from the train station and some stairs (all to be expected in the Cinque Terre) we were greeted by Donnatella, who took care of us throughout our stay. I had the best nights sleep ever in Manarola and after visiting the other towns, felt we made the best choice staying in a quieter town. The breakfast there was perfect. Not too many choices but what was provided was absolutely fresh and delicious and we received our caffe latte every morning especially made for us from the machine on the premises. It was the BEST coffee we had in Italy during our two week trip. Donatella and her staff are genuine, polite and accommodating. This was the highlight of our Italian adventure.

P.S. Right up the stairs from this B & B is a great little restaurant called Trattoria da Billy's. Do not miss eating here.

Da Baranin is a great find, and you will be very happy to stay here. We stayed in one of two apartments across the walkway from the main building. Everything is very private, and I felt like we had our own place, and we had our own key to get in every night. We had our own balcony, and our apartment was large (large bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room). The balcony overlooks the town square and the church, and is surrounded by the hillside vineyards.

The breakfasts here are very well done. The service is very warm, and we always felt like our presence was appreciated. We played "Where's Waldo" every morning with the workers picking grapes on the hillsides. The view is absolutely spectacular, and it is what you travel to the Cinque Terre to see.

Manarola is a great place to stay. We spent a full day here when we arrived, but we enjoyed day tripping to Vernazza or Monterosso, then coming back to the quieter Manarola at night. Trains run till very late, so getting around is a breeze.

Da Baranin is a long walk up the hill, which we did not mind. We are early 30s and in relatively good shape, and we appreciate the opportunity to walk.

We used our time in Manarola to do laundry by hand (which we have never done before, sad to say). Everyone here does this, so we treasured the opportunity to fit in by doing something unique. We borrowed clothes pins (which don't translate well but was funny), purchased detergent at the co-op in town, and used the kitchen sink to do the laundry.

Trattoria del Billy is very nearby, so we made a point one night to eat there. We heard very good reviews before time, but I have to say that our experience was better than could be expected.

We had such a great time here. I would be very excited to come back and stay next time.

This "B & B" was a big disappointment. We knew that it was a cruel walk up a steep hill to get there but the trip was not worth it. The apartment was poorly furnished, not stocked with sheets for the daybed, dishes were dirty and to top it off the room was only attended one day out of the three we were there. Towels were never changed and since the bathroom was not ventilated the towels didn't dry overnight. We complained about the lack of daily service and got some vague excuse that apartments weren't cleaned daily (so why did the cleaners come the first day?). The only bright spot was the breakfast which offered typical Italian breakfast food and excellent coffee.

Hello,
I can just confirm that in the self-catered apartments we do not provide daily room service.
We do, instead, in the B&B and that's aklowledged as an uncommon service for a B&B, being tipycal of 2-3 stars hotels.
I don't get into the details of the other complains of this guest's review, inviting the readers to read the vaste majority of good reviews, espetially regarding the room cleanings which is an absolute must of our management.
Kind Regards.
Andrea

My husband and 25 year old son stayed at this B & B. Even though its a bit of a climb it was well worth it. The room was clean and spacious. We had a balcony overlooking the town and ocean. The breakfast each morning was wonderful. My husband has coeliac disease
and the lady who ran the B&B had plenty of variety for him to eat. Manarola. was a lovely town not too busy. It was a great spot to walk to all the towns. Just a few hundred yeards from our room was the restaurant Billy's by farwas the best place we ate in all of Italy. Once again they were able to accommodate my husband.

Stayed here for 4 nights in late May. Stayed in an apartment, with a kitchen, because it was all they had left. We had no complaints and really liked this B & B. The only time we interacted with owners was at breakfast, which was excellent. The best thing about breakfast was that it was served on a terrace overlooking the mountain. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous from the terrace, like a postcard. It also allowed us to meet the other guests and "compare notes" about where to go during the day.

Other writers have mentioned the "steep climb" to arrive at this B & B. I have health problems and I actually exercised for a month before our vacation to "survive" the climb. I was shocked to find it was a short, easy walk up a hill. (with our luggage) I don't understand the "athlete" who wrote that she couldn't handle the hilly surroundings. If I can do it, anybody can.

The only "negatives" you may find is that the B & B office is closed during the afternoon. Make sure you plan on checking in either in the morning or evening. And starting at 7:30 am, the church bells ring. The church is across the way.

Cinque Terre is stunning, so where you sleep won't be very important, though a nice breakfast is a plus. I highly recommend staying in Manarola (very quiet town) and I highly recommend Baranin. The staff is extremely nice.
