A Casa Cinque Terre Manarola
Reviewed 23 June 2012

We stayed in Georgio 1 for three nights, and it greatly exceeded our expectations! The apartment was larger than we had expected. Especially with the patio that faced the ocean. There's a table and chairs, so you can watch the sunset every night while sipping on Prosecco. The apartment is very minimal, but it's very clean and a great deal for the price. Bring your own towels, soap, etc.

Claudio was very responsive leading up to the trip, and was very helpful once we arrived with restaurant and activity recommendations.

We definitely would recommend this place to our friends, and would love to stay again should we return to Cinque Terre.

I hesitate to write this review, since my wife and I would like to keep this place all to ourselves! Stayed in Francesca 1 a week ago, and fell in love all over again. What's not to love about breathtaking views of both the sea and the Manarola vineyards from your windows? What's not to love about a private little hideaway with two large bedrooms, a cozy living room, a well-supplied kitchen, and a balcony that seems to hang from a cloud over a place only God could have created?

I've read some negatives here about Claudio, but I doubt that they were talking about the same gentleman we met upon our arrival. The Claudio we met was not only accommodating in every way, but he was also a fascinating gentleman who speaks fluent Italian, English, and French. When we arrived by train at the Manarola station, he met us promptly after we called him, helped carry our luggage up the steep hills of the village, and then spent time to not only show us the features of our apartment, but to give us some fun facts about the town, it's history, and it's restaurants.

Claudio is a local chef too, who not only hosted an amazing pasta making class during one of our nights, which included a wonderful wine dinner at a local restaurant, but afterwards invited us out for more conversation over beers at local Manarola pub.

He lives in Manarola, so he's easy to reach during your stay. He even points out his house to you from the balcony while showing you the apartment.

Booking was incredibly easy, since Claudio was extremely responsive to email.

The Cinque Terre is stunning when it comes to scenic beauty. Most of the hiking trails offer spectacular views. Make sure you check out the easiest, yet most-scenic hike of all: the Manarola Vineyard walk, which begins next to the town's church.

Good restaurants all within walking distance, including the legendary Trattoria Dal Billy, which is just a 100 yards from the front door of Francesca 1.

The one thing you definitely should know, though: the CT is not for people who don't like, or can't do physical activity. Francesca 1 is at the top of the town, and getting there -- especially with luggage -- will definitely get you breathing heavy. But ... if you're in at least moderate physical condition, you'll be rewarded by what's at the top of that hill.

Bravo, Claudio, and grazie!

The town of Manarola is a beautiful place to stay in the Cinque Terre. After doing some research and reading reviews online I found A Casa, which they state on their website is a family run business that offers a variety of lodging options in the 5 Terra. So we rented a one room apartment for 85 euros per night for three nights. It's a bit of a climb to the apartment which was not a problem for us. We stayed at Giorgio 1, which has an apartment above it...thankfully no one was renting that apartment so we didn't have to deal with any potential noise. To access Georgio 1 you must unlock a gate and go down several stone steps to get to the entrance. The apartment is adequate. It was clean. The shower is small. By the way, be sure to bring your own bath soap as there is none provided like you might expect in a hotel. You might want to bring your own towel as well - the ones provided are a very thin cotton. It has a nice view of the ocean and town below. The bedroom is roomy. The kitchen is small but fine. The small yard could have used some attention. Claudio greeted us where he said he would. He speaks English so that made it easy for us. So for the price I think this place is fine. We were there in early May before the tourist season really begins so it was quiet. Not sure what it's like when the busy season kicks in. After having been to Manarola I think if we were to return to stay a few days, I would do some more research and see what else might be available.

Thank you to Claudio and his family for helping make this an amazing vacation. From our first email inquiring about availability, to checking in, to arranging to have laundry done (3 of us had just done a bike trek and badly needed it), to our sailboat trip, to the risotto at Lanterna (recommended by Claudio) to check out, it could not have gone more smoothly and we could not have been more delighted.

We stayed in the Maria apartment in Corniglia for 5 nights in late May. It was 4 friends and the apartment was perfect - the beds were comfortable (and I was one of the people in the bunk bed!), it was immaculately clean, and the views...I hope my photos do them justice.

The little town of Corniglia could not be more charming, and I would recommend it to anyone. Claudio also coordinating a boating trip for us, and again, I would recommend this.

This was a fantastic value, all the way around. We loved having the small kitchen, we picked lemons off "our" lemon tree located in the courtyard to make evening spritzers and enjoy the sunset and the stunning views from our apartment. We cooked a delicious meal from the market down the alley way. And, every day when leaving or entering our apartment, we enjoyed the envious looks from other visitors who were walking by our door for views from the panoramic look out just steps away.

Thank you Claudio and family - we cannot wait to return!

Room Tip: We booked the Maria and I almost don't want to tell you that, as I want to stay in it next time...

Thanks to Claudio for the incredible memories for my wife, my 15 yr old son and myself a few weeks ago at Francesca 1 in Manarola. The view was absolutely amazing!!! The apartment was modern, clean and well appointed. Cost was much less than what we expected in this beautiful seaside village. The food in the village was the best we had in Italy. Beautiful swimming around the point, away from the harbor where all of the tourists were swimming.

Claudio was incredibly accommodating to our neophyte family, and made us feel welcome with his stories of living his whole life in Manarola. His English was great and we very much enjoyed learning about the area from a local. To top it off, we left our passports in their "hiding place" in a drawer in the apartment and only realized after taking the train to La Spezia. A quick call, 15 minute ride back to Manarola, and Claudio graciously met me at the Manarola station so that I could make a quick turnaround and catch our next train. Come here and be changed, we're already planning the next visit!!

We read all of the reviews before renting this apt, and were a bit nervous because the apartment was on the ground floor and so we weren't sure if it was safe (e.g. leaving laptops in the apt), and also if it would be sufficient, for a couple plus a baby. We were also a bit nervous about the walk up to the apt. Claudio told us over email to take this one over a more expensive apt that he had, because it would be an easier walk, and that the place was safe. We decided to trust him, and BOY were we ever glad for it!!!

First, it's more spacious that it seems from the pictures. The design is really open, and there was a ton of space for suitcases, portable baby crib we brought with us, and all the mess a baby creates. The balcony was AMAZING. It meant we had a place to hang out whenever the baby slept. We spent every nap time and evening after baby bedtime on the balcony. It was simply outstanding. As a bonus, the setup is such that there is ALWAYS shade on the balcony. In the morning/early afternoon we sat near the bedroom area and looked at the sea, and in the late afternoon we sat near the main entrance, and looked at the vineyards. Perfect. Simply perfect. No need even for a parasol. The price was really reasonable, and our only regret was that it was only available for 6 nights, not the 8 we wanted (we moved to monterosso for the last two nights, but really preferred manarola). Note, this is the apt just below Giorgio 2 which is reviewed here several times. It is VERY secure, it actually faces the town, not the street, so no one looks in, it locks very safely, and the entrance is up a bunch of stairs behind the apt, so it's really hidden from sight.

Some minor notes - the walk up is about 6-7 min climbing, about half of which is stairs. You can go the longer but easier way, around the town through the church, many many fewer stairs, but it is longer. Claudio and his wife are VERY fast on these stairs. When they walked us up we barely kept up. I guess they do this many many times a day... For us it wasn't so easy, but it was a nice workout! :) When we were there there was only one long chair on the balcony (but two regular chairs), apparently the other was broken. He said he was going to replace it, but check in with him if you want to make sure it's been done. We missed it a bit. Also, probably the biggest negative of the apt is that the shower is pretty small, probably 3'x3' or so, but at least the doors worked well so it was easy not to flood the place (unlike some other showers we've seen). Also, the drawers in the dresser didn't all work, but we didn't care. There was a big closet there, and we used our suitcases for clothes, and organized everything else easily. Everything was very clean, and the apartment was stocked with everything we might ever need, including a cafetera...

Make sure, if you stay there, to eat at Trattoria del Billy just 5 doors up the street - AMAZING! (evening reservations needed). Overall, we LOVED it. And after visiting all the towns, if we were to go again, it would be to either Manarola or Vernazza, our two absolute favorites.

Firstly, the apartment itself was good, nice views, well equiped. I would suggest you find an apartment yourself, dealing with the owners.
We had rented 2 apartments for 2 couples,on the first night, there was no one to meet us we then had to stay in a hotel in La Spezia. The next day these apartments were given away to someone else, despite our booking!
After calling Claudio, he became very irrate yelling into the phone at my wife, then at me. On arriving in Manarola, Claudio met us, mentioned that he had confused us with another party on the phone (I would ask is that a reason for yelling at anyone?) and then organised another apartment. He was pushy trying to get us to rent 2 apartments when we were happy with one. There was then some 'confusion' with the change as his busisness partner, took money from me to hand back to me as my own change!!! After initially telling us the price was 105 Euros, he then added a cleaning fee of 10 Euro. Afterwards we saw the apartment advertised online for 85Euros... We felt he was dishonest and rude. My inlaws had travelled from Australia and we were embarrassed by the whole situation. I would not reccomend this service.

Nico_bigollo, Owner at A Casa Cinque Terre Manarola, responded to this reviewResponded 19 March 2012

I feel this review is misleading firstly because the guests informed us they would be arriving in the early afternoon. After waiting several hours, the owner of the property was called by the guests and told they would arrive after midnight. A Casa is not a hotel; check-ins made at inconvenient hours must be planned in advance. The group found accommodation in La Spezia that night.

The next day the clients arrived and found that the owner, believing them to have abandoned the reservation, rented the apartment early that morning to another group. My father Claudio arranged for the guests to stay in another, better apartment, against our own policy of renting for a single night.

The 85 euro price the reviewer refers to is for 2 persons. There were 4 people in the party. Every price on our site is inclusive of all fees, and are clearly presented.

The renting policies which all groups must agree to respect indicate that guests should arrive within an agreed time frame and pay for each night they reserve. Additionally, none of our apartments are available for a single-night stays. The group was in breach of all the above policies. They were not charged for the first night of their booking (though they should have been according to our policy).

My father Claudio found the best solution to an extraordinary situation. The other three guests in the party were pleased and grateful that he was able to negotiate a 4-person apartment with a sea-view for only a single night, but the reviewer chose to remain dissatisfied. My father does have a loud voice (then again he is a little hard-of-hearing, too!) but he is not dishonest.

We invite other tripadvisor users to read other positive reviews of our services by more trustworthy contributors and decide for themselves how to weigh the validity of the reviewer's claims.
