“A bit too holy for our taste”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2013

Actually this is a monastery which also rents out rooms and has a restaurant, and that is not something we knew when we booked. What attracted us was the beautiful location in the littoral hills with fantastic seaside views above the Cinque Terre villages, and the fact that our agriturismo (quite close) had a package price for a three course meal in the offering,

The view was quite spoilt due to the fact that the dining area was inside without windows. The meal itself was basic local fare nothing special. For the people who were into this there was also a priest giving meditational insights but this was not to our taste. On the whole we felt quite out of place.

We stayed at the Monastery from August 12 to the 16, 2010 while visiting Cinque Terre.
Having a car is a great help to move around the region and free parking is available however the Monastery does have a shuttle service down to Monterosso al mare, in the morning and late afternoon.
The Moanastery sits 520mt above sea level and offers a cool refuge from the sweltering heat below. A sweater or a windbreaker would be necessary in the late season.
The rooms are modest ( no TV or radio ) but clean and functional with private bathrooms at a cost of 80e at high season with a decent continental breakfast.
First evening went for supper with the car to Monterosso and found traffic congestion and not much parking available. The Monastery does offer cafeteria style dining, 3 course meals for about 14e. The food was great, varied ( you choose your menu the day before), the service was good and the staff very friendly and helpful. We ate there for the rest of our stay.
We found the monastery a great location, relaxing and above all a bargain compared to hotels and B&B at the five towns below. The monastery can be also a great starting point to hike the miriad of trails around Cinque Terre.
When traveling in Italy we usually stay at monasteries or convents for the great locations and value. We found the Soviore monastery through Monastery Stays, what a mistake !!
We were charged 170e as a finder's fee, just to be told that the Monastery had vacancies and that is all.
Remember that all monasteries and convents can be found on the internet and can be contacted directly. I was not expecting to be stiffed so hard by Monastery Stays.

It would be misleading to describe the Sanctuario as a hotel in the usual sense. They provide basic clean accommodation for large numbers of people visiting this place of pilgrimage to Our Lady. The Sanctuario also attracts walkers from all over the world and there are numerous walking routes in the area.
They also provide good food for the large numbers of people staying there. The location is wonderful-a 15 minute ride up into the hills above the town of Monterosso al Mare. A free taxi service is provided and some local buses go there as well but they all finish quite early in the evening. This is a place for those who like to be away from the noise and crowds of the coastal towns.

This convent is situated high above Monterosso, offering a fabulous view of the Mediterranean. The price was very reasonable, at 85 euros ($170 USD) per night plus 43 euros ($86 USD) in booking fees through monasterystays.com. But the plusses pretty much end there. We arrived expecting to be picked up at the train station. Fortunately, the locals informed us that we would actually be picked up at a park just down the street.

Upon arrival at the convent by van, we struggled to communicate in Italian; the staff did not speak English, and there was very little signage or information available. For example, we learned that dinner was available, but we never fully understood how much it would cost or when it would be served.

The rooms are dormitory-style, some with semi-private baths, offering nice views but few amenities. It was cold up on the mountain, and our only source of heat was a radiator in the room. We were not able to heat the room to our liking at night, and the boiler was shut off during the day. The corridor and bathroom (down the corridor) were unheated, although the water was nice and hot.

Perhaps most disappointing was the convent's location. If we had been hiking, we might have enjoyed the convenient access to area trails. Instead, our only options for getting down to Monterosso were a 90-minute hike or a 15-minute van ride. The van service is included, but only at select times of the day, as we learned after arrival; this caused us to lose a few hours waiting around.

Breakfast was average; there wasn't a large selection of food, but the items available were fresh. It was served only from 8-9am, and we found that we needed to arrive early or risk the kitchen running out of items. Check-out time is very early at 9:30am. In summary, while we found this to be an interesting destination for hikers and beach-goers, it may have been the low point of our October trip; we could have skipped this stay and our visit to Cinque Terre entirely.
