“Glad we stayed there despite bad reviews”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Baia towards the end of May 2014. I was nervous to book there after reading Trip Advisor reviews but we had a great stay there. Everything else was sold out but Baia had rooms available for our dates.

We had a sea view room on the 3rd floor (last floor). We had to take the stairs as the elevator was only for pregnant women, the elderly, the handicapped or for the suitcases. The room and bathroom were very basic but clean and comfortable (Queen bed, nightstands, closet and desk w chair….that was it). The hotel was right across the street from the beach. Sea view and the sound of waves at night were amazing. Train was a 3 min walk from hotel so it was easy to just hop on and go to the other nearby towns.

The staff were nice and helpful. Sure there was this elderly lady who yelled around and told me not to eat my croissant in the lobby but whatever…

The wifi was only available in the lobby but that didn't bother us. Breakfast buffet was mediocre. There was coffee, tea, cappuccino on order, yogurt, bananas, cheese, and not so great croissants and danishes. No hot dishes.

Baia served the purpose. Great view, clean rooms, good accessible location. I recommend it.

This hotel is across the road from the beach with wonderful views and in close proximity to the station so the location is everything you could wish for. The rooms were quite small but kept clean. However it all goes down hill from there. A couple of the reception ladies were quite rude, wifi is only available in the foyer but it did work quite well and the lift is only available for bags!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room opposite the beach and on a low level above ground unless you like climbing stairs

We had a triple room and it was quite small with the extra bed being almost like a small trundle bed. Despite the smallness it was comfortable and had everything you need. The housekeepers did a really good job in keeping everything in order.

There was a couple of people we came into contact with at reception. There was two very friendly and helpful staff and a third less friendly. The third was an older woman and I think she just struggled a bit because she didn't know any English (which is undetstandable). The staff were really helpful when I came down with bronchitis in helping us contact a doctor and allowing me to have breakfast in the room.

Great location, straight across the road from the beach and you can hear the water from your room. Even if you don't get a sea view room you can generally still see the water - we could see it from both windows.

Right up the road from the train station, very close walking distance. Wifi is only available in the lobby.

I would stay here again.

Excellent location, near the beach. Mean and rude ladies at reception, you don't feel as if you are in Italy .... All in all, good location, average breakfast and full of rude ladies....
Other than that, you can hear waves from nearby beach when sleeping, excellent feeling, you almost forget that downstairs at reception the National Guard is waiting for you!:)

Room Tip: rooms with balkony on the third floor

My family and I were disappointed with this Osteria. To start, the only waiter was not interested with our presence and threw the menus on the table. The food was awful, especially compared to the other restaurants around. Items were overpriced and not worth the bother. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I'm torn about reviewing this hotel as 'poor' as I quite enjoyed my stay here. The reason for the 'poor' rating is because it's 3 star guest house at best, but with a 4 star hotel price tag. The rooms are very, very small and don't appear to have been updated in any way since the 70's. One day someone will buy this hotel and invest appropriately to make it an absolute stunner. It's a property that deserves to be updated and for the money they charge, they owe their guest more than they give.

There's no chandeliers and polished marble, but our stay at the Hotel Baia was memorable for other reasons. For an old hotel built in 1911 this place is more like an old guesthouse - Fawlty Towers style. Our adjoining rooms were small, but clean, with basic fittings and appointments. The view from the window and balcony over the beach and along the coast to the other towns in the Cinque Terre was just stunning. I found myself standing there for ages watching the boats, the beach, restaurants and people, and enjoyed going to sleep listening to the waves.
The included cold buffet breakfast included a selection of cereals, fruit, croissants and rolls. Not elaborate, but quite enjoyable. Wi-fi is free in the lobby and struggles to cope with the high level of demand from all the users. Every member of staff we interacted with was charming, helpful and very patient with our lack of Italian. I can't understand people who travel to another country and expect everyone to speak the same language that they do!
We stayed 3 nights but didn't have dinner at the hotel restaurant (tables set up right along the beachfront) as there's many other places to choose from nearby. There's also a small and a larger supermarket within a couple of minutes walk and the train station is 50m of flat walking away, so you don't have to struggle with heavy suitcases up goat paths and steep, rocky steps.
This is a lovely place to stay, but don't expect luxury. We could easily have stayed longer.
Recommended.
Hint - get a room that looks over the beach.
