“A lovely peaceful spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2013

We really loved our stay at La Colonnina. Our room was on the top floor and had a separate entrance off the terrace, so we felt we were in a little villa. We had our own terrace with curtains if we wanted extra privacy, but we left them pulled back. The view of the sea was wonderful! The bathroom was unusually big and spotlessly clean. Monterosso al Mare is ideally situated for visits to the surrounding towns. We only stayed two nights and wish we could have stayed longer. Loved our stay!

Room Tip: Ask for room 120, the rooftop room. You'll get a lovely view of the sea.

We stayed here for 3 nights beginning of October 2013. We took the train from Genoa - approx 1 hour...from the train station its a short 15 minute walk along the esplanade through the tunnel of love..where if you are lucky, at the entrance, is a man sitting playing a digital piano and singing beautiful Italian songs !
Once arriving at the end of the tunnel you reach the main square, here there are 3 signs pointing you in the direction to the hotel...about a 3 minute walk...hotel is on the right and yes...up quite a few stairs - 20 ? I didnt count.
The staff Giuliana and Selena are efficient and friendly - speaking fluent english. Our room was on the 2nd floor (the hotel only has 21 rooms) It was spacious and clean with a nice bathroom (no tub).
Breakfast is served in room on 1st floor that has a lovely outdoor seating area. Typical european style - cold meats, cheese, yoghurt, tinned peaches, prunes, pastries, toast. The coffee was great and included cappuccino, espresso, latte etc. Staff were efficient and spoke english well.
WiFi although free, on mobile phone was bad...dropping in and out - the owner did ring the technician and complained about the poor reception - it didnt get any better during our stay.
We visited all 5 towns in Cinqueterre by train 10 euros unlimited travel per adult for one day. These towns are all within a few mins of each other and well worth exploring.
To sum up the hotel was a great place to stay, we ate in Monterosso and enjoyed the Set Menu on offer for good value 13 euros for entree, main course and wine/beer.

situated In the old part of Monterosso this hotel was In a great location just a few meters from restaurants & bars but very peaceful & quiet at the Hotel. Lovely gardens to relax in & most rooms have a nice balcony or terrace. Staff very helpful & even packed us a takeaway breakfast as we were leaving by train prior to breakfast.

Room Tip: our room had a large patio area but no view. Some rooms have a bit of a view but not worth paying ex...

We stayed in La Colinnina for 3 nights at the very beginning of October . We had triple room and our daughter was thrilled with her own "wing" off of our main room. She even had her own door to a rooftop deck. We were at the end of the hall and so the shared deck felt like our own! The rooftop patio and beautiful entrance way seating under the lemon trees when you enter this hotel are also great spots to relax. Our room was O.K. , dark and plain and the bathroom was a bit cramped. However, you don't go to Cinque Terre for the rooms and this hotel has an excellent location, the young women who work the desk are exceptional at their job and the breakfast room with huge windows and a great buffet make your stay worthwhile. If you have wheels on your luggage - a lovely walk along the water from the train station, through the tunnel and up a side street ( with a sign directing you in the main square) gets you there no problem.

I took six women (all 65 years young) on a tour to the Cinque Terre. We stayed for 4 nights at La Colonnina in the old town side Monterosso al Mare. We arrived by private transfer from Genoa (beware this drive if you get car sick!) and when we arrived in Monterosso, our driver called the hotel for us to let them know we we had arrived. You can't drive into the town without a special permit, so the hotel sent a luggage porter with a small van to bring our 7 suitcases and 7 carry-ons down the hill for us; we walked the 1 block to the center square, where we met with our luggage. Then had to walk with our luggage (the porter took some bags) back up a small side street half a block, where the porter then carried the bags up a flight of stairs to the hotel entrance for us. (This service cost us €2/bag; well worth it for all the luggage we had between the 7 of us!) It may sound like quite the ordeal to get to the hotel, but you'll have to do something similar with any hotel inside the Cinque Terre, and the Colonnina took very good care of us.

We were greeted kindly and offered a refreshing citrus drink upon arrival, then we were shown to our rooms. I had reserved 3 double rooms with private balconies and one single room for myself as tour leader, and all the rooms were prepared as I requested with two beds and separate bedding for each of my girls, as opposed to 1 large matromonial bed to share. Even my single room had a nice large bed and a inner courtyard (that was not private, but still very nice, and something I was not expecting). The bathrooms were quite nice, lots of hot water (in the afternoon you had to let it warm up a bit first, but once hot, it didn't run out) and great water pressure. I never noticed any problems with noise, but my room was also down its own hallway. But overall, the hotel seemed very quiet whenever I walked the other hallways.

Breakfast was very nice for Italy, with cereal, sweet breads, fresh fruit, deli meat, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, juice, etc. Coffee, cappuccino, espresso, hot chocolate, and tea all available fresh made. Breakfast is served in a nice, large, bright room overlooking the garden. Very nice atmosphere to start your day.

The hotel provides free WiFi (you have to request a username and password at the front desk), but it works better for laptops than phones. (My iPhone kept losing its connection everytime I closed out of my browser or let the phone go into sleep mode, and I had trouble relogging back in afterwards. I finally gave up using the free WiFi on my phone. My laptop's WiFi connection would time out if I closed it, but I usually didn't have a problem logging back in.) Make sure you write down your WiFi's username and password; you'll have to keep logging in anytime your device goes to sleep or is inactive for a certain amount of time. BUT, that aside, I'm still very very thankful to have free WiFi available. Not all hotels provide this service for free, but they should. This day and age, I am not likely to stay at any hotel that does not offer free WiFi.

The two ladies at the front desk, Selena and Guila, are absolute gems. They are so kind and helpful and speak English wonderfully. They helped my group with train schedules, dinner reservations, hiking recommendations, and anything else we needed. They were always smiling, and greeted us cheerfully each time we came and went throughout the day. The manager (owner?) Guiliana was also very nice, smiling, and helpful, though I only saw her twice.

Everyone in my group loved the atmosphere at La Colonnina. There is a lovely treed garden with tables and chairs to sit at, or if it is too cool outside, there is a comfortable sunken sitting area in the lobby. The hotel is just steps from the center plaza, but being on a side street, it is very quiet. It's about a 10 minute walk to the train station, through the tunnel to the new town part of Monterosso; but most of the good shopping and restaurants is in old town, so it's otherwise very convenient.

I would highly recommend La Colonnina, and will definitely make reservations here again when I bring another tour group to the Cinque Terre. I am sad to be leaving this lovely home-away-from-home, and cannot wait to come back again!

If you're staying in Monterosso, this is a wonderful hotel in Old Town. It's close to great restaurants but in a quiet location and very restful. Our room had its own private balcony where we could sit and relax. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. This is a charming place to stay.

La Colonnina was not my first choice when looking for a hotel in Cinque Terre but as it turned out, this hotel was very good! First, corresponding with the hotel before arrival was very easy and the staff were efficient and always quick to respond. Upon arrival we were served homemade lemonade, from the lemon tree in their garden...delicious! La Colonnina is a family run business and all the employees were extremely polite and helpful in suggesting restaurants, hiking and train information plus even the best bit of the beach to enjoy some sun and a dip in the ocean.

Our room was quite large and had a good sized balcony, although the view was of an adjacent building. Possibly rooms on a higher floor would have a better view. The room was not plush by any means but did have a firm bed which was extremely comfortable. The bathroom had a small sink area and narrow shower...not my favorite but then we were here to enjoy the outdoors! After spending our days hiking it was always a pleasure to return to a spotlessly cleaned room. The internet was spotty but you could always get a good signal downstairs in the lobby area.

Breakfast was included in our room rate. There were highs and lows on the breakfast buffet...organic jams and cereal but the fruit selection was always limited and in sparse amounts, plus the yogurts were your basic store brand quality. There were plenty of sweet breads and cakes (which I never saw anyone partake in) while the few bits of cold meat and cheese were on the dreary side. The cappuccinos were watery and bitter so we switched to coffee with hot milk, which was very good, and that became our staple each morning.

Finding the hotel was a bit difficult to find but the locals were more than helpful with directions. La Colonnina is in an excellent location in Monterosso with easy access to good restaurants, wine bars and shops. The beach was a 2 minute walk and the hotel is positioned near the beginning of the hiking trails. All in all our stay was very good and we'll definitely recommend it to our family and friends.
