“Great View and Great Owners”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2008

My wife and I stayed at the B&B Villa Pietra Fiore from July 6th until the 12th. The owners Marie and David were wonderful. The room we stayed in was spotless, comfortable and made us feel at home. The breakfast was great, with a remarkable view. The property was nestled in a mountain. it was the best sleeping i've had on vacation. It is far removed from the town. If you need a ride the owners will provide it for you. Marie told us please call usif you need a ride up the hill. The bus runs frequently enough during the day to provide adequate transport. I would recomend this place to anyone looking to relax and enough a beautiful location like Cinque Terre. The value for the price is a bargain.

First of all, I am not here to bash this B&B. I am giving our experience and a more accurate picture of where this place is located. We did not have a good time here.

Their website does not give an accurate description of where they are exactly and the reviews make it sound like it's not that far from Monterosso and it's no big deal to walk. Further, they only show 2 rooms on their website and neither of them is the room we had. I'm not sure if the room we had is new, but we did not enjoy it. They also have an apartment and do not show that on the website.

This B&B is located outside of Monterosso- uphill, around several curves in the road on the highway. In order to get there you have to take the local buses. The buses run maybe every 30-40 minutes past the B&B. If you miss the times it goes near the B&B, then you have to walk down 5 minutes or so to another bus stop. The walk into Monterosso via the trail is steep with lots of steps and takes at least 30 minutes. Even the owners didn't suggest we walk into town via the trail. Once you get to the B&B you then have to walk up 2 steep driveways to get to your room. We figured out early on that we would have to work our schedule around the buses and pretty much just stay in town all day and not come back until after dinner.

The B&B is located in the Cinque Terre park, literally on the side of the mountain. There are beautiful views and the grounds around the B&B are lovely.

Breakfast was no big deal- it was juice, coffee, croissant, bread and yogurt. That is a typical European/Italian breakfast and what we had all over Italy.

The room we had was very spartan and the bathroom was very small. I think this room was part of their house as the owners and their child were next door and we could hear them very clearly when we were in the room. Two problems occurred:

1. We asked for a blanket the first night as a cool front had moved into the region and we knew the heat would not be turned on for a few weeks. She said OK, but then was talking to us and said if we weren't happy it would be OK if we left- she would understand. We kept trying to reassure her we just wanted an extra blanket. We thought that was an odd thing to say to guests who had just checked in.

2. This brings me to the part that caused us to leave after 2 nights and find another place- their 2-yr old child woke up crying, and whining the 2 nights we were there- with her parents getting up and talking loudly. She would do this for 3-4 hours and we could not sleep. We said something the next day and the owner just said 'sorry' nothing could be done. We know the child wasn't sick because in the morning when we would leave, she was up, outside, playing and laughing.

We found another hotel with vacancy and packed our bags - the owner didn't seem to care. I feel like until they can get their child to sleep through the night, they should NOT be renting this particular room out.

In conclusion, this place is probably fine for hikers, backpackers, people who have already been to the Cinque Terre. However, if you are new to this area, want to go back and forth to your hotel, or hang out in town and have access to restaurants, the beach and other activites- DO NOT STAY HERE.

After staying at Villa Pietra Fiore - you will want to move to the Italian Riviera. This B&B is the only hotel (or one of few?) in the hills on the bus route which make it very convenient to eat dinner in town and escape the noise at night. The B&B has fantastic views (the double rooms have balconies!) and I have never eaten a better breakfast - fruit is picked fresh after you "order". It was simply amazing.

Villa Pietra Fiore was wonderful! Marie and David are the nicest people; they go out of their way to make sure their guests are happy. They both speak Italian and English, and Marie speaks French as well. The rooms were very clean and cool despite extremely hot temperatures in the middle of June. The breakfast area was beautiful, overlooking the sea with plants and flowers all around. The breakfast Marie served us was the best we had in Italy.
Villa Pietra Fiore is not for young singles who are looking to party it up while they are in Cinque Terre. A lot of noise is not welcome, and unless you have a car, it is difficult to come back to your room very late at night because the B&B is up the hill (about a 5 minute drive from the town). However, not having a car is no problem if you don't plan on staying out too late. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk between the B&B and Monterosso's town. During the day, this is actually a nice walk. We enjoyed picking up the Vernazza-to-Monterosso trail and walking down to the beach. At night, however, it is a bit scary. The road is pretty steep and not lit all the way up, making it difficult for you to see and for drivers to see you. This walk can definitely be avoided though.
David picked us up as soon as we arrived at the train station and took us back down when we had to leave. They both offered to take us back and forth throughout our stay. In addition, a bus runs between the middle of town and Villa Pietra Fiore. Its only about a 10 minute ride, very convenient. It stops running around 7, but David was more than willing to pick us up whenever we wanted before 11 pm (which is a very nice offer considering they have a 3 month old baby to care for).
All in all, we were extremely happy with our stay at Villa Pietra Fiore. I can not say enough wonderful things about Marie, David and their family. They were the nicest, most accomodating people. We loved Monterosso and this B&B, and we will definitely be going back (hopefully soon!).
