“Lovely private apartment”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

We rented a private apartment from Hotel Marina, and it included the benefits of the hotel, such as happy hour and breakfast. Our apartment was only a block away and lovely - very modern and very well priced. Marina, the proprietor of the hotel was amazing…she is very nice, welcoming and does so much! We saw her in the kitchen preparing for the happy hour. The breakfast was delicious with a crepe station offering Nutella, strawberries, apples, etc. as well as an omelette station with many ingredient choices. Lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, juice and a coffee machine that made almost any type of coffee drink you want at the push of a button. There was also a large pastry station. All included in the price of the room, which was very reasonable. We were out and about during the happy hour, so we missed that, but based on what we saw, I'd say it was probably something we shouldn't have missed.

We had a fabulous time staying 2 nights at this hotel. Marina and Erica are truly great hosts, helpful in every way. The breakfast served in the lovely lemon garden on the third floor terrace was sumptuous, and chockfull of options. Monterosso is a lovely village and an excellent starting point for Cinque Terre hikes. The beach is just a stone's throw from the hotel. Unbeatable value. Given a chance, we will return to Albergo Marina.

We chose this hotel based on Rick Steve's Italy guidebook recommendation. We were thrilled at the location being very close to the Old Town's center (wonderful restaurants very close-by, short walk to beaches, NOT way up on the hill). The hotel had free wifi, although the service there was hit or miss. Breakfast was wonderful as the owners, husband/wife duo, would make to-order omelets, crepes, and had a nice bar of other continental breakfast items. Also, in the afternoon, they had basically lunch included, too! From about 2-5pm they served pasta and fruit that was very sufficient until we went out for dinner later in the evening.

If you pay in cash, you get a 10% discount, so we definitely recommend doing that.

This is a 'basic' hotel that had everything you need- but nothing fancy (except food was awesome!) Clean and comfortable, with good location which were my only must-haves! We appreciated having the beach towels & beach bag included in our room, too.

We (my husband and I, pretty fit-- early 30's) hiked the trail from Monterosso to the next town, which took 1.5 hours and was a bit harder than we expected (hot and a lot of uphill). But the views were wonderful! Great photo ops from the trail looking into Riamaggiore... or however you spell it! (The "post card" pictures were from the view from the trail.)

We ended up taking the boat taxi to see the other Cinque Terre towns since a few mud slides close portions of the trails to the other towns, and we wanted to have more beach time. I'm happy I got to "see" the other towns, but in my honest opinion, Monterosso was the only town worth 'staying' in or even spending any amount of time in. It is by far, the largest of the towns and had the most to choose from with regards to restaurants and beach space. We briefly walked around 2 of the others, but didn't see anything at all that I couldn't have lived without. The views from the boat made for great photo-ops and that in itself is the only reason I was happy we spent the time going to the other towns. Other than the hiking, I could have stayed in Monterosso and been perfectly content!

*I researched all of Rick Steve's recommendations and my top 2 picks (Hotel Pasquale & Villa Steno) were already booked up even 5 months before our trip. I was a bit bummed, but once we got to this hotel, we were very happy we didn't stay at Villa Steno- as it was quite a HIKE just to get to that hotel! and Pasquale was right on the water, but honestly, Albergo Marina wasn't far at all, as the town is so small!

Room Tip: This hotel doesn't have any rooms with a view of the ocean, but it is still in great location...

We were treated like family, that's the best way to put it. The service was impeccable. We had to check out earlier today and they allowed us to store our bags for free, and continue to use the amenities--lunch and lemon garden included. The breakfast was delicious and hearty enough to keep you traveling for hours, and the lunch snacks were easy to just stay satiated or use as a free lunch. The staff helped us with any questions, spoke perfect English, and really made us feel welcome. Honestly the stay was so perfect that we are in our new hotel in Florence and I just had to write this review. The rooms were small but why do you need a large room in a location like this? Old town is far better (more charm and more quiet) than new town, and I can't imagine staying anywhere else.

We came here for lunch and had two different salads for lunch. Both of them were perfectly prepared and tasty. Price value is unbeatable at Monterosso and the outside seating is lovely in the heart of this cinque terre village!

We stayed here for 3 nights and found it to be a fantastic location. Close to everything but quiet and friendly. The breakfasts were wonderful and by far the best we had in Italy. The room was very small for 3 people but we spent so little time in the room it really did not matter. We never made it to the afternoon snack as we always seemed to be out and about.

Albergo Marina is located in Monterosso al Mare, which is the ideal spot to jump off and enjoy the Cinque Terre by walking or by ferry service. Good sized town with many options for entertainment and enjoyment. Albergo Marina is located in the central village and within close walking distance to nice restaurants, bars, shopping, beachfront, and ferry service. And, as a bonus, it is just far enough off of the beaten path to be quiet while still being convenient. An easy ten to fifteen minute walk from the train gets you there. Once there, you are steps to what you need.
Now, don't think that the Albergo Marina is going to be your cookie-cutter chain room. More like your standard European family-run inn type of room. Here is the great news. It is super clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. Add in the free breakfast, mid-day meal and you have a lovely experience as compared to the many mediocre tourist oriented hotels dotted throughout the Cinque Terre.

Room Tip: Rooms off of the street side are quieter, but I prefer street side which allows the windows to open...
