“Wonderful experience, great location, & clean!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

We drove from Milano and parked in the Monterosso parking lot (fee is 18 Euros/day; can also pay hourly) which is a short walk to the Hotel Margherita. Whether driving or arriving by train, Monterosso is "flat" relative to the other Cinque Terre towns and the convenience of the train station & the parking lot to the town, when you're lugging luggage, is not to be discounted. The Hotel Margherita staff are very friendly, professional, very accommodating and made good recommendations. The rooms and bathrooms are very, very clean. We had a room for 2 nights and added a 3rd night to spend more time in the area. The room with a balcony was lovely and roomy. Breakfast is included- a nice varied buffet of croissants, cakes, breads, yogurts, cold cererals/milk, cheeses/salamis/ham/other meats, fresh fruits, and coffee, tea, and juices. There are hard-boiled eggs and you can make your own soft-boiled eggs to your liking!!! We hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza which has been repaired since the floods of a few years ago, had lunch, and took the train back. We drove to Portovenere which is very beautiful & memorable and not to be missed (the two large churches- St. Peter and St. Lorenzo are wonderful as is the port and town). Would definitely return to Hotel Margherita!!

This hotel was wonderful. We stayed here with our daughter, my parents, and my in-laws and had a great experience. Our room was spacious, clean, and modern. We enjoyed an aperitif on the patio one night and one night in the lobby. The breakfast had many choices to appeal to a wide variety of palettes. The owner was friendly and the person who answered the phone at the front desk helpful when we had trouble finding parking for our car. It was very difficult to park, which may have been because we were there during a three-day weekend in Italy. However, this was a great hotel in a nice location.

We had some trouble leaving new York and were therefore a day late in arriving. The staff was incredibly sympathetic to our anxiety worn demeanour by the time we reached there. We loved the hotel! It is certainly not new, but that was part of its charm for us It was comfortable and convenient. We thought the breakfast wonderful and help and advice was freely given. We loved its ambience and spent 3 very pleasant nights there. Would highly recommend it. When out taxi did not arrive for an early morning departure, the gentleman called a friend to take us to the station in good time. We felt nothing was too much trouble to ensure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable.

The staff at Hotel Margherita made our weary party feel more than welcome! After we got freshened up, we were served wine and delicious appetizers. The stay was perfect except I left my jewelry bag in my room when we left. We contacted them and they completed our sentence about what we had left behind. They mailed it to the hotel that we would visit at the end of our tour in Rome but unfortunately that hotel returned it to them (even though we had told the Rome hotel to expect it). The wonderful staff at Hotel Margherita finally were able to mail that returned package back to my home in Florida. In addition, they would not let me pay for the two postage charges. They went above and beyond what was expected have earned my repeat business for sure!! You will not be disappointed as they will treat you like family!!

Location: Excellent as my family and I drove into Monterosso and their was a nearby parking garage (costing about 20 euros/24 hours). Walking distance to the train station was less than 10 minutes and to the coastal hiking trail to Vernazza about 5 minutes (which is open even though officially listed as closed during my trip). Also very close to good restaurants.

Comfort: We had two rooms, and each was very spacious and modern. The wifi on the hotel floors was unfortunately down, so we could only access the internet from the lobby but you should be spending your days at CInque Terre out and about anyway. Beds were a little stiff, but overall everything was cleanly and convenient.

Breakfast: Included breakfast buffet is not of the utmost quality, but offers a lot of variety and does its job of fueling you for the adventure ahead.

Loved the location, the decor, the staff and the breakfast. All were excellent. The gentleman who runs the hotel was extremely accomodating and friendly. Also loved the deck off of our room. The bathroom was very spacious.

That said, this hotel has some serious downsides. The room was very cramped for two people traveling with luggage and given that most tourists travel with at least one piece per person, I would think a hotel would give that some consideration in the layout and design of their rooms. One of us had to keep our luggage on the desk. The desk is so close to the bed that when someone is sitting at the desk, the other person has to crawl over the bed to get around them. That gets old after a day or two. Loved having French doors that open up to a balcony, but screens would be great to keep Mosquitos out at night. The air conditioning didn't work very well, so we needed to sleep with the French doors open at night.

The wi-fi system SUCKS! You are assigned a separate password for each device, but it drops you constantly, especially overnight and you must relog on every single time you want online. Exasperating! That is ludicrous in this day and age!

This is a very comfortable hotel, well situated in Monterosso. Our only complaint is that upon checking in they did not tell us not to drink the water, nor were there any signs posted by the sink warning that the water should not be consumed. To make it worse, there were glasses right on the edge of the sink. We only learned at a restaurant where we went for supper that we learned this was not an option. I asked the girl at the front desk when we went back to the hotel if we could drink water from our room and she said "No". When I told her that I had already consumed some to take my pills, she said that "It's not like the water in Africa, but it is not recommended!" In our preparation for travel we had not read any literature saying the water in Cinque Terre was not potable so I'm not sure how we would have known. Anywhere else we have traveled where it is a problem, there have been sings posted right above the sink warning people.

Room Tip: If you end up with a room at the top, there is an elevator that can help take your bags upstairs, al...
