“Bed Bugs, otherwise an adorable place!”
Reviewed 22 March 2013

I have amazing things to say about the place... except that I got bitten by bed bugs- lots of them! While I stayed there. I liked the accommodation, thought the staff was friendly, enjoyed the people I met, and felt the bed and room was clean. Bed bugs bites take 7 days to appear, and I didn't realize I had been bitten while I was staying there. Over 3 nights, I had 40-50 bites. I should've contacted them so they know, but never got around to it.

I remembered my review being published for this hostel, but now it is missing. so i am trying again.

This is not a recommended hostel, except that it is clean. That's all.
The reception is SUPER HOSTILE, no flexibility, RUDE, and just not welcoming.
Although the location is very very good, the way up to the hostel was scary. Kinda.
There's nothing to write home about for this hostel, you share with other 8 people, bed done up every day, no locker, towel provided.
Doesnt feel safe.

My husband and I, along with our 16 year old daughter stayed in the Giulia Suite through Mar Mar this past June. Like everything in Riomaggiore, it was quite a climb to get there up charming winding pathways. But every ounce of the effort was worth it. The apartment sits right over the sea, with a very, very large terrace on which to relax.

The apartment is very cozy and comfortable - a nice, well equiped kitchen and large kitchen table, and then a connected bedroom area. There is no couch or actual "sitting area". The size was perfect for the three of us (one king bed and one twin), but any more people would have made it tight. The small restroom was fine, but the because of the way that they have to pump the water up the hills and such, the toilet was a little noisy. It would cycle through this long pumping cycle after every flush. There is no air conditioning, but while we were there it wasn't a problem and the fan provided was just fine. If it had been much hotter though, it would have been stuffy as the apartment is tucked into the hill and the only window was the sliding glass door entry and adjacent window. But...that amazing terrace offered some nice shade and breezes.

Every morning we would walk down to the main street and buy espresso and fresh pastries from the little bakery, and then bring them back to enjoy on our terrace. It was a spectacular way to start the day. The grocery stores in town are tiny and have very limited hours, so plan ahead!! There were a number of very good restaurants near -- and try the pesto! My daughter had pesto at almost every place we went in the Cinque Terre area because it is a specialty and each place makes it a little differently....so yummy!

We did all of the typical hikes (take enough water!) and visited all of the villages. Each village is worth the time and has a completely different flavor. The trains made it very easy to get around. Do your research on which sort of park pass/train tickets to buy because that part gets a little confusing. Also, pay attention to the train schedule they give you because a few of the trains don't stop at all 5 villages. You can find yourself over-shooting your stop if you aren't careful! If you arrive in Riomagiorre via train from La Spezia the first time, you may find that your train car is in the tunnel because the station is small. Hustle off regardless and just walk down the path - the trains don't stop for long and you can easily miss the stop.

The charm of this area is so wonderful -- not at all like the more beachy Monterosso or other larger Italian towns. Little old ladies would meet up on benches every evening to gossip, the streets were quiet with no real traffic and the locals would line up for the fish truck that came early on Friday mornings. If you are looking for a quiet environment like this, you can't get any better. If you want nightlife or a lot of shopping, you should look elsewhere. One of the highlights for us was the sweet older lady that lived in the apartment overlooking our terrace. Every morning she would open her shutters and smile at us -- she would point to the sea and view and say "bella, bella!". It was very special to feel a part of such a real Italian town.

We decided to stay at Riomaggiore - in fact it doesn't matter which town you pick because you are going to walk around them all and the trains are frequent and quick and cheap

wherever you stay you need to be by the coast / railway rather than up in the hills (which are too far to walk, and having a car at 5Tere is a bad idea - parking is difficult, driving is not great, it's just not designed for cars)

Great view from our apartment! Right over the harbour.

Small balcony had room for 2 people, and that fab view - morning sun not evening sun

You can sit at the harbour in evening if you want more sun

we were literally one minute from the main street, but it was high enough to be quiet, but you can hear the sea during the night - nice!

One star docked for the cheap fittings, it felt generally plasticky, (typical Italy really), only one wine glass (though we probably could have asked at their office on the high street)
but there was a cooker and fridge

Proper double bed rather than two singles pushed together - important when you're on holiday!

You have to pay in cash, but you can do this at any point during your stay

Hot water and electricity unlimited, charging of iphones etc all fine

No wifi for internet but there was a cafe jsut up the street we used where it was free

Overall good value for 90 Euros a night for the two of us

Room Tip: Check what your view will be like. It's all about the view!

When you're staying somewhere as beautiful and historic as Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre, it would be a crime to spend too much time in one's accommodation anyway. So we really only used this as somewhere to sleep.

Nonetheless, as far as that went, it was nice. Very large room for what you're paying for, plenty of storage space. Ours had a (slight) sea view, but as mentioned by others this is a range of accommdoation options, so you may end up with a different space.

Rooms were clean and tidy, bathrooms were fine. Beds were made up each day. Lovely space to come back to after a long day of walking.

Only small thing I would say is just a little more attention to detail would go a long way towards improving the experience. Lights missing covers, a few bulbs out here and there, missed getting clean towels second day. Not enough to hinder the experience, just something that could be improved upon.

Tips:
- Cash only, no credit cards although there's an ATM in town and one by the railway station
- Go for a swim at the beach, fantastic clear blue waters at the beach just around from the marina
- Once again, check the reception's opening hours. We knew in advance so could work around, may be easiest to sort the bill the night before if you have an early train and just drop the key in their mailbox.

Have a great stay in an amazing part of the world!

We stayed in Babo for two nights in September. The room got quite hot but we opened the windows wide and were comfortable. There is noise, but it's Cinque Terre, and not Mar Mar's fault. I think the only complaint I would have is the service in the office. They were very helpful with the booking process but when we got there at 1:02 they made us wait an hour because the office closes for lunch. I understand the need for a lunch break but the lady sat in the office the whole time and didn't actually leave for a break. They are also completely inflexible about check out times and won't check out anyone before 9 or after 10 though our train was leaving at 7:30 the next morning. So we had to check out before the office closed at 5pm the day before forcing us to cut our day in the other towns short and make sure we got back in time. It was irritating but the quality, price and views from apartment were worth it.
