The low route everyone talks about doesn't look like it's going to be reopened anytime soon, and not wanting to take the train, this was our only choice. The tourist information booth by the train station will give you a free map and tell you exactly how to find the walking route, as well as how to get all the way to Monterosso by avoiding the train, which was our goal. As other reviewers have stated, it is indeed steep. My husband and I are very active and we were drenched in sweat! We were fine with tennis shoes; I don't recommend the flip flops or skirts I saw some ladies wearing. The whole route is worth it because of the views - you won't see them from the train. Wear and bring sunscreen, as the route is very exposed. Water too, and of course, your camera for those incredible shots!
