This place is truly beautiful and is probably a special place for those who live there, however I feel a bit sorry for them being so overwhelmed by tourists in the summer months. Be warned that if you drive there, you’ll need to walk almost a kilometre down the hill into town and the same distance back out!

We spent 2 nights in Vernazza and we are glad we did. Coming by train only for the day make you miss the peaceful and quiet morning and evening as most tourist boat and train arrive around 11-12pm. The village has many great restaurant and ice cream shop, a nice little beach to swim and great walk from and to. Train to go to other villages are regular and it takes only a few Minutes which is super convenient! Spend at least 1 night to enjoy the atmosphere!

Hiked over from Monterosso al Mare and enjoyed a dip in the bay (below the trail, near the piazza and where the ferry takes off) afterwards. The water here is shallow enough that you can see the bottom! Change behind a towel in the shower area (under the building along the rocks) or come wearing a swimsuit- the only bathrooms we could find were crowded and next to the train station. Skip the beach, instead sun on a rock to dry off afterwards. Grab a cone of fried seafood or focaccia for lunch.

Not sure if all the pictures are ‘touched up’, but considering what an important tourist attraction it is - mainly because of the different coloured houses - you’d have thought it would all be much better maintained! The red house - signature photo, front of beach/harbou - is now more grey and shabby than burgundy.

And yes - busy it is, so go early or later if you want to avoid the big groups.

We travelled by train - staying in La Spieza - so quick short journeys. Bought E4 for each separate journey. We think you could buy the E10 Day Pass at the station window on the platform but there was quite a queue. We just bought tickets as we went along: La Spezia to Vernazza / Vernazza to Manarola / Manarola to La Spezia E4 each x3 journeys. After the 2-villages, we didn’t feel the need to visit any more villages.

Com’on Vernazza, give yourself a spruce up!

Not my favorite among the 5, but can be a nice place to have a meal, good offers of restaurant and i like a lot of the church. I came walking from Corniglia so it has been a nice walk.
