“Romantic escape on a sea rock”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

After you take 100 steps, cause there are no streets in Vernazza, except one, you enter a wonderful, cosy room. We had a partial and nice sea view. But you don't really care because for everybody there are wonderful terraces on the rock. You will have your breakfast on a terrace with full 180* sea view. Fantastic!

Prepare light luggage because the stairs are a lot. If you come by car, you'll park app.1,5 km away from the village so you have to walk.

My husband and I very much enjoyed our stay in Vernazza, and expect that moderate accommodations are the norm. The climb to our room on the first night was challenging, especially carrying 2 bags up 8 flights of stairs to a HOT room with only a little fan, however, the views and charm of the town won us over. We had a room with a bathroom, but unfortunately the terrace overlooked the common-area deck which was loud at night. The breakfast spot was beautiful and sufficient for our needs. The staff was unfriendly, however, which is surprising given the fact that it must survive on tourism. The only bad meal we had during our 3 night stay was actually at Gianni Franzi's restaurant - expensive, small portions, and again, an unfriendly, condescending waiter. I would visit Vernazza and Cinque Terre again, but would look to stay elsewhere.

Gianni Franzi offers great common spaces: a balcony sitting area, an open terrace room, and a gorgeous breakfast terrace overlooking the sea and coastline. It is located right in the middle of town, close to the marina and shops. Now the caveats... as mentioned by others, there are many stairs to climb (107 to units on the top floor). Also, folks using the terrace room at night can be noisy (Americans, of course!).

The hotel is well located by Vernazza's lively port. Don't expect any of the high tech amenities no wi fi, no A/C no TV. The rooms are spread out in several buildings and be prepared to go up many many stairs. For us none of that was an issue and we very much enjoyed our stay. I booked a room with my own full bathroom which is worth it unless you want to share it with other rooms. The rooms are clean and the bathroom was brand new and very clean. Staff was very nice. The breakfast area was amazing and worth staying here just for that.

Room Tip: Make sure your room has its own bathroom.

Ahh...Vernazza....The most picturesque of the Cinque Terre. Gianni Franzi, like most of the accommodations there require some effort to get to your room. Since the hotel is terraced and has several different levels, you might get lucky and get a lower room or you might be lucky to have an incredible view but have a few more stairs to climb. Think of it as your daily workout! Our simple room was clean and comfortable with a bathroom. Request a room with a bathroom when making a reservation, unless standing in line waiting for the shared bathrooms are your idea of fun. Noise level was a bit louder in the lower positioned rooms as the traffic at night seem to pass in front of our door however. (Bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper.) We were not fortunate to have a room with a view, but we were geographically midline when it came to how many stairs we had to walk up.(Great when you have had a sumptious dinner with wine and it's dark on the stairwell). A small television was included (placed high above the entrance door) but be warned that only 5 stations come in and most are in Italian. But no matter since who is in Vernazza to watch tv? New to the Gianni Franzi is breakfast on their veranda, overlooking a breathtaking view of the coast. There, the typical breakfast is served (proscuitto, salami, cheese, yogurt, juice and a variety of baked goods) including a cappuccino making machine. Train access is easy as well as the hiking trails but be forewarned, Vernazza suffered a major flood in 2011 (although the town looks and feels quite functional and restored since then) which has closed off some of the lower trails to neighboring Monterosso and Corneglia. Still if you can hike to the other towns, you will not be disappointed in the spectacular sights that will enfold in front of you. And if you want the "money shot" photo, hike up to the beginning of the same trail to Monterosso at dusk to watch Vernazza glow at night. Water ferries are also great to see all five towns and an easy hop over to Portevenere where luxury yachts can be seen parked in the harbor. Gianni Franzi also has a delicious restaurant
(yum, pesto, fresh anchovies or seafood) which during rainy season is next to the busy bar and during warm summer nights, overlooks the famous bay. Vernazza is a well worth place to visit, relax and feel Italy, Gianni Franzi is in a prime location to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bathroom.

From the train station you walk straight down almost to the water and its on your left! Yes, you go up A LOT of stairs (luckily my husband was there)! But, it is so typical Vernazza-you pass the entrances of people's houses. Breathtaking once we got to the top and another spiral staircase to our room! The room was a little dated and only had a sink (clean though)- so we had a shared toilet and shower. Although we never saw anyone else use it or wait outside it was still a little annoying. We did book late and if I remember it correctly they only had those type rooms left. The breakfast spot and location were really what blew us away. We walked right out from our door and there on the side of the mountain is the dining area for breakfast. Thought the breakfast was just standard european (bread/pastries, meat/cheese, espresso machine) but the view and tables on the cliff were an amazing way to start the day. The stairs where you walk up to the rooms is right in the middle of the "square" or center of Vernazza-prime location. I thought the staff was really nice and helpful. Loved the town of Vernazza, we thought it was the best out of the 5! The hike to Monterosso has a lot of stairs, but well worth it! The views are incredible! We hiked there and then took the train back after we relaxed on the stoney beach! We also took the train to the other towns and it was very easy do!

Yes, there are a lot of stairs to climb to reach the hotel, and more up a very narrow spiral staircase once inside, so keep this in mind if you will have a lot of luggage. The single rooms are on the small side, the doubles much bigger -but -all are very clean and comfortable and when you're on holidays, you don't really spend much time in your room anyway. The views are incredible, waking up to an endless ocean where you can't quite figure out where the ocean finishes and the sky starts is a dream. The housekeeping staff don't speak a lot if English but are friendly and make your bed up each day and provide extra towels (towels in Italy are more like sheets, not the fluffy towels I am used to in Australia -another insignificant detail) Breakfast is included each morning and is served on a terrace with the most incredible view! It's basic as Italians don't really do breakfast -croissants, cakes, cereal, tea, coffee etc. I would definitely be back here and would highly recommend it.
