We came across this restaurant when looking for somewhere to eat away from the busy piazzas, although on the edge of one, the vines and greenery screening the outdoor seating from the rest of the square gave this restaurant a cosy feel. After studying the Italian only menu we were ready to take a plunge, order and hope for the best but when the owner approached to take our order we were pleased to find he spoke excellent English and was more than happy to explain the menu and make recommendations. I opted for the pesto pasta, a Genovese speciality and it was divine. My steak was perfectly cooked and my partner was impressed with his clam pasta and sea bream. The restaurant was quite pricy but the food was excellent and the staff were happy for us to linger with a coffee, even though it was quite late, so we didn't feel rushed. We had to go inside and find someone in order to pay our bill, but that's not unusual in Italy!

The receptionist at our hotel recommended this restaurant as particularly great for fish dishes, so we decided to try it. At 8:30 PM we were the only clients; when we departed at 10:00 about 1/3 of the tables on the terrace were filled. The owner graciously translated the menu for us, recommending some typically Genovese dishes. The home made fresh pasta with pesto sauce was probably the best I've ever had. The grilled swordfish, however, had been cooked to death, served over a bed of fresh rocket and accompanied by a pile of grated fresh carrots and lettuce leaves. The grilled calamari tasted like it had been thawed and refrozen, and the fried calamari was without any seasoning. Best to stick to an antipasti and the pasta. Maybe have a dessert to finish (we skipped this part). And the espresso - we had better at a truck stop along the autoroute.

This historical restaurant kept the prices honest over the years. It is not "chela", but not extravagantly expensive or a "tourist trap". The clientele is a mixture of tourist and locals, the latter a testimony of the good, authentic food. Do not miss the home made fresh past with pesto (a typical basil, pine nuts and extra vergin olive oil sauce), one of the best I've had. The fish is another speciality, always fresh and the "fritto misto" (a mix of fried small fish and shrimps) is excellent. The restaurant is on an old square, which has become "fashionable" with lots of bars, but it is not particularly noisy and in the warm months the dehor (patio) is most enjoyable. The restaurant seems to be a bit understaffed, so service can be a little on the slow side, but the waiters are very efficient, run around all the time and do their best to satisfy any request you might have, also providing good suggestions for the food and wine.

First day we dined here in 4. The service was good and food excellent. Therefore we dined another two times here. Good value for money. Kind Patron and staff. Try Ravioli with pesto. It's not on the menue, but ask for it, and you will have a lovely experience.
Sure to recommend.

The place is situated in a square which is surrounded by bars's and other cafe's. The owner speaks perfect english and is more than willing to go through the menu with you. The place is clean and you have the choice to sit inside or out. The service staff are immaculate and friendly and speak some english. Try food native to genoa, you will not be disappointed with either starter, mains, or deserts.
