We went to Ristorante L'Atelier dei Sapori Liguri on the recommendation of the desk clerk at our hotel. We absolutely loved it and much of our enjoyment could be attributed to our waiter. He was, quite simply, an exemplary ambassador for the restaurant and the Ligurian region of Italy. His English was very good and he patiently explained menu items, wine pairings and the unique quality of Ligurian olive oil, specifically, why it is so much better for frying. On that recommendation we shared the mixed fried fish and vegetable starter (not unlike tempura) which was amazing. Then we each ordered the tagliata beef on arugula topped with shaved parmesan. It was also mouth wateringly good.
Too full for dessert, our waiter offered us a complimentary liqueur produced locally from herbs grown in Camogli. Once again we loved it.
This was easily the best restaurant we visited in Genoa and one of the best on our entire 4 week vacation. Language barriers can be difficult for servers and patrons alike and English speakers are luckier than most when travelling in Europe. Still, the effort this young man made to make our meal a positive experience for us was greatly appreciated and we highly recommend Ristorante L'Atelier for food and service.
