“Great location, a very good room and the staff which doesn't wish to help”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

My room was very nice. Clean, large and had a nice view over the city. The location is twice as nice. Not so far from the see, and the district is not that like at the port, I mean we had less beggars, searching for money or to sell their things. WIFI was ok for the first day, but then something has happened and I couldn't connect. Reception was not useful. They didn't help nor troubled themselves to call to the IT help desk. Another thing. I needed to iron my dresses, but they didn't give me that chance. Just special woman could have done this, which was not acceptable to me, since my dresses were too expensive to try this luck. Stuff was not friendly at all. No client-oriented approach.

Room Tip: the higher the better

The bold headed concierge must have a bad day. He looked annoyed when we asked for information and collected our room key.
We stayed in a Superior room which is clean, comfy and spacious.
The only reason I chose this hotel is because it is close to station Brignole.

I would recommend Hotel Continental which is opposite to station Principe. The concierge is far more friendly and helpful. The rate of both hotels are more or less the same. Some rooms are equipped with massage bath tub in Hotel Continental. There is also a bottle of complimentary water in the room. I felt more welcome in Hotel Continental than in Star President.

If you know the city the location is rather good from many directions, also for the Volpi bus to Malpensa. Breakfast for those used to the Continental ones is ok, just like the gym in the fourth floor. And even if their own parking place seems to be always full, the public parking side in the same place has just about always space.

Beware of your check-out time: the procedure can be slow but nevertheless, good value for the money.

We are absolutely unhappy with the stay in the hotel (which couldn’t not reach the rank of 4 stars). We're very unhappy with the following:
- More than 50 Euro additionally paid for parking
- Inability to sleep during the first night of the stay
- Inconvenience with the elevator and staircases use

After complaining to the company we had no responce.

1. Parking
When we made the reservation it was written in booking that there is an available parking near the hotel priced 15 Euro/day – no reservation needed. When we made the reservation we pointed that we need a parking.

When we arrived there in the afternoon on 5th of April we were informed that the parking of the hotel is full (the one with fee of 15 Euro), so we can use the one next to it priced 2 Euro/hour. The thought on the next day could have free spaces in hotel’s parking, but there were not. We asked what’s the price of the other parking for a whole day – the hotel personnel didn’t know but supposed there is a reduction for a whole day and night. So we could not move the car to the hotel’s parking and we paid the absurd amount of 84 Euro for 42 hours (there is now other parking in Genoa like this one!!!).

So, in stead of paying 30 Euro for the 2 days there we paid 84 Euro – 54 Euro more, that is a misleading from your employees, wrong information in booking.com and we would like to be compensated!

2. Room comfort
In the hotel room we could not open the window. These days were really hot – about 20-22 degrees C, so the room was so hot and unventilated. The air conditioning was working only in high degrees so we couldn’t temperate it and we couldn’t sleep all night!!
The next day on the reception they promised to open the window, but when we came back in the afternoon it was hotter than ever.
After more conversation and with difficulties they opened the window.

3. Elevators in hotel
In this hotel there are three elevators of which only one was working on the 5th and morning of the 6th of April. So in these busy weekend days it was necessary to wait around 10 minutes every time you want to use the elevator. Once I found the staircases which was in awful condition, restoration proceeding.

Room Tip: it is quite because the windows cannot open. Be careful with the parking!

The only thing I like about this hotel is it strategic location in the city. It's so convenient for first time traveller like us. What I dnt like is the people serving us. The front desk should put on more smile. Service with smile! Not treat as a routine and place their frustration on us. Wasn't helpful at all. Consolation, free wifi.

We selected this hotel based on its location and proximity to Brignole station as we originally intended to take a day trip to Turin. In terms of connections: the hotel is within 5 minutes of both Brignole overland and metro services and the number 13 bus stops outside. In terms of getting from the airport, you can catch the Volabus to Brignole and literally cross the street to find the hotel. The sightseeing bus stops at Brignole which makes this easier for the leisure traveller. So for us this was a good start.

Check in / check out were efficient, the staff spoke fluent English and were helpful. Wi-fi is free and clear instructions are placed on the reception desk to help you connect - you just have to refresh your connection daily to prove you're still a resident. A computer terminal, with free printing, is made available to residents and staff will advise on travel arrangements and the times that local transport services start / stop. Service was exemplary.

The lobby, restaurant and bar area are beautifully done out and so the rooms by comparison are a little disappointing and dated. That being said, the bed was comfortable, the room was clean, and the heavy curtains kept out all light and noise. If like us you tour rather than lounge you won't have time to notice. The bathroom was well appointed, we had plenty of space, storage and lights. There was A/C in the room, a hairdryer, TV and mini bar.

Breakfast was a nice balance between cooked and continental where you simply helped yourself. Staff were attentive and offered to fix cappucinos / lattes / etc but otherwise you were left to wake up in peace, which for me is perfect. There was a good selection which was well cooked andboth hot and cold were changed regularly. The dining room was very clean and staff spoke a good variety of languages. It was a well organised operation.

I would happily return to the hotel, it was good value for money and I enjoyed my stay. We also ate in the restaurant on one evening and had the best meal of our stay in Genoa and so I would also highly recommend that as well. It works for business customers, conference users and those looking for a base to tour the region. Comes highly recommended.

Room Tip: We were on the 12th floor at the rear of the hotel. Despite overlooking the railway station we were...

Upon arriving at the hotel we were checked in with no problems. We quickly unpacked as we were keen to go out and explore. We decided to only take my phone in case of emergency as we were concerned about pickpockets. My partner left his phone on the desk in the room, it was a new iPhone 5, only a week old at the time which is why we decided to take my older phone out with us instead. Off we went in our hire car which we parked outside, my partner took me to one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, portefino, we enjoyed a great evening and lovely meal there, we were gone for around 6 hours. Upon returning to our room at 10pm, he went to check his phone and it was gone, even though we were both certain he left it on the desk as we remembered having the earlier conversation about who's phone to take out, we turned the room upside down twice looking for it, but it soon became obvious someone had stolen it. We stayed in a room in the far corner of the 9th floor. It was only when we went down to reception to report the incident we realised you had to pull the door very hard for it to lock - stupidly in our rush to go out we had not realised this at the time - someone who works in the hotel clearly knew about this and went into our room whilst we were out with the intention of stealing from us. We cannot believe our own stupidity in leaving the phone on the desk, however, we did not expect anyone to enter our room either!!

When we reported this to reception they acted shocked and implied that we must have taken the phone out with us and lost it. They were uninterested. We then walked to the police station to report this and got an incident report sheet to enable us to claim off our insurance when we returned home.

We wanted to go home there and then as we both felt our privacy had been invaded an it was horrible to think about a thief in our room - we couldn't get flights home for less than £1000 so we were then stuck at this hotel for 3 nights.

We tried to make the most of it as we realise worse things happen but we certainly felt uneasy that there was a thief amongst us that weekend.

Please think twice before staying here!!
