“Pleasant Surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 January 2014

This was a nice modern hotel that was very comfortable at an affordable price, close to town.

Genova itself surprised me. A beautiful historic waterside harbour town with lots of small hillside lanes that should not be driven by... like I have done in the past.

Good points were:
Spacious room
Nice views
Easy to find
Parking
Great Breakfast
Modern
Clean
Price

Bad Points:
None

I would recommend this place for an overnight stay, or for a few days.

Room Tip: Breakfast was great

The Novotel in Genova is basically a business hotel and usually has pretty steep rates. A constant traveller would not normally take the place seriously. But with all the business men out of town on a Friday night, just watch the room rate tumble. We ended up paying about 100 euros under the weekly night rate for a basic room. And the rooms at the “basic” end are rather spartan. There is plenty of space, but no style or class about the rooms, or the hotel generally. The hotel looks like something which might have been cool in the 1970s, which has undergone innumerable facelifts and is desperately in need on another now. The bathrooms are especially haggard. That is not to say that the place is not clean and tidy and represents reasonable value if you can get it at the “Friday” rate. A good option if you can get it at a good price, but maybe avoid if the business men are around.

Room Tip: Avoid the weekdays when the business men are here, rates vary wildly.

I stayed at the Novotel recently as part of a cruise-stay package - but I wouldn't have chosen it otherwise.

It's an OK hotel, focusing primarily on the needs of the business traveller and not tourists like me, to whom location is very important. It seriously is miles from the city centre (about E20 in a cab from the station), on a very busy road in a not very nice part of Genoa. I walked 20 minutes down to the supermarket at the ferry terminus, as bus stops aren't anywhere nearby (according to the hotel staff), and hurried back to the hotel - so that was my one night in Genoa spent not very productively.

The hotel staff varied - one lady was very helpful, the other looked at me as if he'd like the ground to open up and swallow me - and I had to wait 20 minutes to be served in the bar - although the wine and snacks were very nice once they arrived, and the barman attentive.

My room did smell of smoke (and I'm a smoker - although not indoors) but when I opened the window, the motorway noise got too much.

I'm sure you could do much better for the money.

We stayed here for one night before catching the ferry to Barcelona the next morning. We requested a room near the ground floor as I don't like elevators. When we arrived we had been placed on the 6th floor and there was no open staircase. We were moved to a second floor smoking room which was absolutely foul. STUNK of smoke and could not open the windows, room was dirty, bathroom was dirty and there was a strange smell of burning rubber coming from the bed. We ate at the restaurant and paid 55 euros for an extremely average meal which was not as described in the menu (although I will concede the service was good in the restaurant). Breakfast not included in price either! It will do for 1 night but don't stay there if you don't have to.

Starting with the positives the Novotel offers comfortable rooms and excellent food.

However, the rooms are quite small compared to other Novotels, particularly the bathrooms.

The hotel itself is located quite a way from the historic city centre, and with the public transport winding down significantly after about 8:30 you can be left with either a long wait, or a very long walk back.

Wi-Fi in the hotel was free, but this may be more to the fact that nobody would ever agree to pay for the awful connection that was available on the 5th floor.

In general, a poor example of a Novotel, only raised up to adequate by the excellent food and the friendly staff.

Room Tip: Don't waste your money on an Executive room, its a standard room with a bathrobe
