“good location and ideal for those travelling by train”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

A small but comfortable room in a nice hotel with unexpectedly nice public areas on the first floor for relaxing, including an outdoor terrace. Well-located for Genoa's main areas of interest all of which are in an easy walk - the basilica at the end of the street is an amazing must-see. A good choice of local restaurants in the same street and only 100 metres from the train station which made it ideal for our early start.

We stayed in the Continental for one night in May. We booked the D,B&B package which was great value. The staff were friendly and the room was great; very clean and well appointed.

There's a hidden bonus too - if you stay here you can use the facilities in the Grand next door! The hotels are linked by a walkway on the 1st or 2nd floor. The Grand has a rooftop 'hot' (well, warm really) tub.

Breakfast was fantastic - a massive selection of hot and cold dishes. So easy to overeat! Our evening meal was excellent too. A little confusing at first as it wasn't clear what was included in our package but that was soon resolved and explained by the manager.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We had a 'corner' room which was very spacious. No view from the window but a sizable room

Having previously stayed at the lovely Grand Hotel Savoia next door, I was not disappointed with the Continental which I feel equals the latter in all apects. The first thing I noticed was the antique style lift, reminiscent of the ones shown in the old movies. - fabulous. I travelled solo and was given a double room with plenty of space. There was push button shutters which made life easier and the bed was indeed a 'double bed', not two singles put together, being the case with many hotels on the continent. The desk staff were all pleasant, professional and informative and the daily maid service was second to none; I always mention this, as these ladies do work extremelyhard. Everything was spotlessly clean and I enjoyed dining at the lovely Tralalero Trattoria which is flanked and used by both hotels Savoia and Continental, as well as the general public. The girls who wait on in the Trattoria are an asset to both establishments and they always found me a nice table where I felt comfortable; also breakfast was served in there every morning. Speaking of breakfast, this was lovely with a wide choice including scrambled eggs and bacon. The capucchino was one of the best I've tasted and the waitress in the breakfast room was extremely pleasant and couldn't do enough for me. Overall I strongly recommend this hotel for location, quality and cleanliness. Also check-in/check-out was swift with no delay.

This hotel is just across the piazza from Genoa Principe Train Station and the adjacent Via Balbi is filled with eateries and shops. The centre of Genoa is a pleasant walk away. Also worth a visit is the castle which can be accessed by the lift at the side of the pharmacy. The hotel reception will inform you of this. Approximately 70 cents takes you on an unexpected journey into the cliff which leads to the upper level. The castle up there is also worth a visit from where you will see lovely views of the city of Genoa. I walked back down round the pathway which took me back to the end of the via Balbi, nearest to the centre. There are also great views of Genoa from the rooftop at the Hotel Savoia, which by the way is accessible along the first floor of the Continental. You are also able to use the bar and lounge area of the Grand Hotel Savoia which is ornately furnished to a high standard, with chaises and seating areas aplenty. My stay was really enjoyable and I would not hesitate to stay here when I am next in Genoa, a city to which I will always return.

Room Tip: Front rooms on the upper floors.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of a cruise. The staff were polite and helpful and the process was quick. The lift is old ,but our room on the fifth floor was large and we'll appointed. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. We ate in the restaurant in the evening where the service was excellent and we had the daily special and a carafe of wine. The hotel is close to the railway so it was easy to get about transport is cheap and we enjoyed an afternoon in Bocadesse ,a beautiful old fishing village. In the morning the breakfast was excellent with a big choice.

Room Tip: High up at the back

Nicely surprised at the size of my room with a nice view. A little noisy at night but very comfortable. A good value for the price. Breakfast is nice and staff are friendly and helpful. Next to the train station and a short walk to the waterfront. The trip to Portofino by boat is nice.

Situated across from the Principe Railway Station, we repeated last year's decision to stay at the Continental. Our overall experience was coloured by our trip timing with our stay over Sunday and Public Holiday Monday when many places were closed. The hotel possesses 'old world charm' with large rooms, although cramped ensuite facilities. Staff are friendly and have good English. The lift is an ancient, manual one which is both charming and concerning if users do not properly shut doors. Good breakfast options are available. Recommended.

We did not have a reservation and after travelling a whole night and morning to Genova from Croatia, we rocked up and asked if they had a room available. The reception clerk was very efficient and we were checked in quickly. The room was beyond belief! I forget if we mentioned that we were on our honeymoon, but it certainly fit the bill! A huge comfortable bed and a living room and the bathroom had a spa! All for roughly $200AUD. We had a great night walking around the harbour area and retuned to have a delicious meal at the hotel restaurant! I would recommend this hotel to everyone and will definitely stay here again. The antique elevator was so great as well. I felt like I had stepped back in time.
