We arrived from Cinque Terra by train and 1/2 block walk to hotel. Major bus stop by train station. Easy walk to cruise terminal. Outside does not look like much but inside looks new and modern. Top floor and deck breakfast area relaxing. Breakfast was nothing special but best coffe drinks of our two week vacation. Great location.

Very friendly, convenient hotel so close to the Principe Station. Rooms modest but comfortable, with good Wi-Fi. Breakfast sparse, but coffee excellent. Easy to access Via Baldi and the rest.

This hotel is extremely close to the Genova Principe Railway station which is a major benefit if traveling to Cinque Terre and other locations near Genoa (like Turin). It offers free wireless internet and is within walking distance to most major sites in Genoa. Our problems with this hotel were that the neighborhood is loud at night, the breakfast buffet area was not clean (although the rooms were very clean) and the breakfast buffet itself was very limited.

As you might expect from the price, this is a very basic hotel with no frills. However, we found it clean and comfortable enough....if the air conditioning in our room had worked (which it didn’t). Instead, we had to deal with a very unhappy, surly gentleman at the front desk who first refused to listen to our complaints, then refused to admit there was a problem, and then admitted that a technician would (hopefully?) arrive the next day to fix the A/C. More than anything, he wanted to return to watching TV and to ignore us.

He and the management refused to offer any discount for our unpleasant stay (it had been a hot day, and opening the window let in the noise from the several busy restaurants immediately behind the hotel). Needless to say, we left immediately in the morning (ugh...a 10 am checkout time!). In summary, this is a very basic but clean hotel with bad-attitude management.....BEWARE!

(Note: we've been traveling throughout Europe for the past two months, and this is the only hotel I've been compelled to write a negative review for. We are not fussy folks!)

I spent 2 nights in Hotel Galata, April 27/29, 2011. I had room 103 that was a real single: small (but not tiny) and basically furnished (but with new furniture) it was impeccably clean. Bathroom with shower, large enough for my needs. Breakfast was good. Personnel at the reception were helpful. They offered an early (11 am check-in) which was much appreciated.
The hotel is located at 20 m from the Principe train station; near the Palazzo Principe (3 min) and Pallazzo Reale (3 min). To reach the city center you take Via Balbi, Via Garibaldi and Via Cairolli, all included in the UNESCO heritage, therefore the 20 min walk to Piazza dei Ferrari is a visual feast.
Although I've read comments about the area being less safe, I do not agree. I am a single female traveler and I returned to the hotel around midnight and never felt threatened.
The price was a bit high (68 eur/night), probably due to the fact that I stayed there during the Euroflora exhibition. However, I noticed that there are not cheaper options in Genova, especially during the fairs.
All considered, I recommend this hotel for budget travelers.

Genoa is quite a lively city so its not surprising that parking is a bit of a problem. We parked in a garage recommended by the hotel management and it was just round the corner, safe but expensive. That said, the experience with Hotel Galata was very good. Very friendly and helpful people, nice room, nice bathroom, comfortable beds, ok breakfast. The location was ideal (we cycled) for the town and the harbour. At the back of the hotel, in a narrow alley, populated by all the nationalities of the world, there were several very good, reasonably priced restaurants. Yes give it a go. We enjoyed it thoroughly.
