We originally had a tentative booking with one of the other inns in La Spezia, but when we got there, we found that you had to phone a number to check in and as we didn't have a phone, we had to find a phone centre and make a call. The number listed seemed to be out of service and so we were left having to find another accommodation. There isn't very much choice in La Spezia, and most seem to be sort of guesthouses where there isn't a lobby and you must ring the buzzer or phone to check in.

After a bit of wandering around town, we came across a sign that said "Rooms". It led us to a little back street to a building where we had to ring a buzzer. The manager answered and he spoke English. This place was cheaper than the original place we had been considering, so after taking a look at the room, we accepted as we really needed a place to stay. The location near the train station was ideal as well.

The room was clean, but very small. It included a very small private bathroom, but ours was not attached and was located across the hall. No breakfast included.

The walls in the building are very thin and so you can hear everything. If someone is playing music or watching TV, you can hear it and when we stayed there, there was someone playing loud music all night. The building is also very damp and has no heat. In November, La Spezia can be quite chilly. As it was quite damp, we came back to our room the 2nd day to find a wet spot on the bed. Also the sheets always felt damp even after airing them for a bit.

Overall, it was an ok place to stay if you're looking for somewhere to base yourself for the Cinque Terre, but there is probably better. At least the price was right.

We were unable to find any accommodation in the Cinque Terre villages, as we had not booked in advance, so decided to stay in La Spezia for three nights, as it is only a short train ride away. We were surprised to find that there was also not much to offer in La Spezia, and most places were those where you have to press a buzzer, only to get no reply. I came across L'Albatros just as the manager was taking a few people through the door so quickly asked if there was a room available. We were given a ground floor room with our own bathroom. No breakfast and no internet, but we got a good discount off the official rate, which seems to be fixed at 65 euros for this type of accommodation.

Unfortunately the room was only available for two nights so we had to go elsewhere for the third night. Fairly basic accommodation but pleasant enough and the manager was friendly. we were a bit concerned about security as the ground floor opens onto a courtyard. Despite assurances that this was a very safe town, we felt the need to keep the shutters closed at night.

An excellent location for anyone coming by train though it could be a bit hard to find.
