“Great find”
Reviewed 9 May 2013

We couldn't make our original train, and the owner accommodated our very late arrival and was super helpful. The room was great and the location perfect for train travel. Our room faced out back on a patio/garden and was very quiet. Cleaning staff was very nice and helpful in the morning when we needed help storing our luggage for the day. We wished we could have stayed longer to make the most of a great find and explore La Spezia. Only complaint...hard to find the breakfast location, and there was little left/coffee cold.

Our twin room was a good size and pleasantly decorated with modern features. The bathroom was clean and stylish. Breakfast vouchers were included for a cafe/ bar a short walk away. The free wifi came in handy so make sure you ask for the password from reception. The location was convenient as it was a short walk from the train station and the main street filled which was filled with shops and restaurants. It was certainly an affordable base to explore the Cinque Terre.

Stayed here for two nights on a European tour, and was a wonderful way to rest up and enjoy the area. The rooms were basic but clean and roomy enough for me, and are right in the middle of town (the noise can build a bit but mainly just traffic)

I should probably declare that I am much more a fan of charming old apartments than modern hotels, but even allowing for that I think these apartments are a good option for value accommodation.

Particularly given the price I paid for the room I was very happy indeed and would recommend it.

We stayed here before travelling on to The Cinque Terre and we wished that we had made it our base for the whole time.
The room was clean, airy and comfortable with surprise surprise tea/coffee making facilities a very rare thing to find in Italian accomadation.
There was a fridge in the room and free wifi which didn't work at first but the lady who runs the place soon fixed the problem for us, she was really friendly and welcoming. We emailed her with our estimated arrival time and she was there to open up and let us in.
La Spezia is a great town with a pretty waterfront and a pedestrian mall chock full of interesting shops and great little resteraunts and the resteraunts are surprise surprise reasonably price for Italy we had fabulous pizza's for just 4.50 Euro's each and they were delocious, just go to the first little pizza resteraunt on the right as you are heading down the mall from the hotel.
I would recomend this place as we found it to be of good value and in a convienent location.

Need a phone to call staff to come and check you in. Rooms are small but adequate. Need a facelift. Can be quite noisy at night, but we were there Fri/Sat night. Breakfast terrible. Need to walk 5 mins away to local cafe where they give you pastry and tea/coffee in exchange for voucher. Great to be near station though and oddly more noise from traffic than trains. Stay in Levanto if walking Cinque Terre (unless doing but near Portovere).

We stayed at this hotel August 6th - 8th.

Positives:

-Location: Le Spezia is not a nice or charming city of Italy but it does make for a great base for exploring the Cinque Terre. The hotel is by the trian station which is very helpful.

-Staff: The lady who greeted us was extremely sweet and very helpful. She pointed out all of the restaurants that we could get a discount at and let us know where to go for our breakfast which was included. She also showed us where the printed train schedules were right in the hotel and gave us a very informative brochure regarding the Cinque Terre. She even had suggestions of other places we could go explore but we just didn't have enough time.

Room - the room was small but very clean. Everything looked brand new and the bathroom was small but very nice.

Negatives:

-Lack of reception area: In other words, aside from when you first arrive no one is ever at this hotel. We are from New York visiting Italy for the first time we did not 1) know our exact time of arrival and 2) our iphones were not compatible with Italy's cellular network (Italy uses an older system). After a long and exhausting trip from Lake Como we arrived to find the door to the building locked with a sign saying not to ring the bell of the other apartments as they are not associated with the hotel. The sign had a phone number requesting that we call management. That would have been fine...but we had no cell phones in a country that we've never been to before. We had no way of knowing when we were going to arrive at Le Spezia as we were traveling from Menaggio, lake Como. We were exhausted so with very little options my Fiance went to look for a public phone and I proceeded to ring other door bells. A tenant kindly answered my ring and I explained the situation to her. I think she must have contacted the hotel manager or something because that is when the nice lady mentioned above came to our rescue. Do not under estimate just how frustrating this situation can be when you're actually faced with it.

Service - A lack of reception area is not as big of a deal if you've visited the area before and are familiar with your surroundings or you have a cell phone and are able to contact management. For non-europeans visiting with no working phone this hotel is really not recommended. The fact that there was no one at a front desk to help us made our stay very difficult and stressful, primarily upon arrival. Also, despite having left our towels on the floor, the cleaning staff did not bother to collect our dirty towels or give us new ones. After a long day hiking the Cinque Terre and with a long trip facing us the next morning I was extremely frustrated at the fact that I didn't even have a clean towel to shower with.

Breakfast - you are given a ticket for everyday of your stay to get breakfast at a nearby cafe. You basically get a coffee and a croissant. I would have been fine with that but the cafe had very dry and tasteless croissants.

It should be noted that there was no safe in our room.

I would not stay here again nor would I recommend it to anyone.

suggestion: if you only want to stay here so you can visit Cinque Terre opt to stay in one of the villages instead. They are all beautiful but I absolutely loved Varnazza, I would have paid the extra money to stay there instead.
