“It's Okay”
Reviewed 7 April 2011

We'd heard about the NH chain from a friend, a straightforward business-style hotel. And that's what NH La Spezia is.

When we arrived, we were a bit confused - it seems the hotel has only just joined the NH chain, and still had the old 'Jolly Hotel' signs outside. Hotel parking was only on the street, and the under-cover affiliated parking lot is several blocks away.

The service is nice enough (depending on who's at the front desk; sometimes it was a bit off-hand to be honest). Our booking inclued breakfasts, and these too were nice enough.

The rooms were okay - overall the decor was tired, though. There is apparently a renovation in the works, so things may get better.

The 'free' internet service was rather disappointing - wifi only in the lobby, and only for a limited time.

Overall, the stay was okay. Just okay. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to write home about either.

I have been vacationing in La Spezia since I was a child (my mother being a native of the town) and whenever we had out of town guests we would always recommend The Jolly Hotel , it is a landmark in town and has always enjoyed the best reputation.. last year I took my mother in law there who still speaks of the prawns she enjoyed in their dining room. The rooms are somewhat small but the cleanliness and accomodating staff more than make up for it.. The location is fabulous, within walking distance of the ferries to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere... This is the only place to stay in La Spezia!

Stayed here on a coach tour for five nights, nice clean room, ours overlooked the port, no balcony just a small window, mini bar in the room, just use as a fridge as the items in there are over the top expensive. The staff were very obliging, especially the waiters in the roof top restaurant. Food was good, but as we were on a coach tour our dinner had only one choice of starter, main and dessert. Breakfast was very good, the usuall continental, and bacon , scrambled eggs and sausage. Dissapointed as there was a bar advertised on the hotel web site, but it has been closed, although there are lots of bars around the town. This hotel is more of a base to visit the surrounding area as there is no swimming pool, bar or entertainment. Would stay here again.

We returned yesterdaty from our trip to "Cinque Terra". We stayed at the "Jolly Hotel" in "La Spezia". The room was very nice and clean. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Breakfast was very good and plenty. Close to the train station and to very good restaurants. The town is safe and the staff in the Hotel was very usefull giving us information about taxis, places to go and where to eat. Will definitly recomend the hotel to anyone.

Stayed here for one night, was booked by our tour group. It has recently changed to Nh Hotels, though the Jolly Hotel signs are still there.

A few general things about European hotels I've learned on my travels:
- all tend to be small
- don't pull the cord in the shower, it supposedly signals an alarm to the front desk for help
- walls are thin
- I still don't know how to use that other bowl shaped sink-faucet thing next to the toilet

The lobby and the dining area looked rather nice, brightly lit, and clean. The rooms were a decent size with a large bathroom. But the carpet was a bit worn and the thermostat did not seem to operate and it got warm and stuffy in the room.

The staff was very nice, helping us find a post office and laundry service.

The location was decent. We stayed here not to sight see, just to stay over a night. It was not seedy or anything.

Overall, a good stay, nothing out of the ordinary.

In June, we were vacationing in Cinque Terre and my husband fell and broke his back. I can not tell you the nightmare we experienced at the local hospital in La Spezia. The care was horrible and the caregivers were uncaring and terrible. I moved from our rental house in Vernazza to the Jolly Hotel to be near the hospital and met Simona and all of the other staff members at the hotel. They reduced the room rate, room upgrades, gave me free internet coupons, free coffee, made lots of personal phone calls for me, faxed documents, and on and on. They were also willing to listen and comfort me while we dealt with this nightmare. We had to get him moved it Milan to have surgery and I stayed at the Milano 2 Hotel Jolly which they arranged for me and the general manager Francesco was exactly the same! I again was just floored at the attention and kindess they showed me, room upgrades, etc. I would never, ever stay anywhere in Europe except at one of the nh hotel chains.
