We spent two painful nights in this hotel in July 2011. We travel a lot around Europe, and I have a pretty good understanding what a 4 star hotel looks like. This was not even one star, unless you get a room from the upper floors. First we had a room on the second floor, which was... I can't describe it, I should have taken photos, but at that moment I just wanted to cry. The carpet and walls on the hallway were bad enough, dirty, smelly etc., but the room was worse. The carpet was filled with hair, dust balls and dirt for several cm. The pillows were impossibly old and bumpy, the beds did not have mattress pads at all and the linen were coarse to touch. I told my husband not to even start to unpack our bags and went back to the reception, shaking. We got a bit better room on the upper floor, but it was no four star either.
La Spezia is not a place worth sleeping in anyway, it's pretty much dead no matter which day you stay there. Try the smaller villages, maybe a two star bed&breakfast there won't ruin your trip like NH La Spezia did ours.
