Agriturismo Locanda del Papa

Reviewed 27 January 2013

Reaching La Spezia with a 98 minute delayed Intercity train journey on a sunny autumn day, Davide was waiting for us outside the station with his city car, as previously arranged. Not being in a hurry, he drove via the panoramic road instead of the quicker newly opened tunnel on the Aurelia. La Foce locality is less than 5 kms from the station, the view from there overlooks the town with its gulf, and the Locanda is tucked away amongst trees via a narrow lane. Davide's father (the "papa") less than 10 years ago was a busy highly paid executive until one day he couldn't stand his mobile phone ringing so he threw it away, quit his job and decided to follow his heart as he always wanted to run a farm stay, in this case producing EVOO and wine.
On arrival Davide showed us two bedrooms, one larger with a patio on the ground floor and the second one called Dreams on the first floor. We opted for the lovely Dreams which has wooden beams, small wood burning heater, antique furniture, walk in robe and a compact bathroom (the shower was wide enough though for medium sized bodies). Davide helped us with our luggage up the stairs and when we came back downstairs to the reception/breakfast room he kindly took the time to show us various points of interest on his maps spread out over the table. Breakfast is continental including fresh fruit and yoghurt, however, the second and third morning Davide offered to cook eggs from his chickens. The following day he gave us a lift to the Europcar office in Via San Bartolomeo, and the next day he showed us the way again with us following in the hire car. By the way, we don't recommend Europcar in La Spezia as the lady there will lighten your wallet and upset your holiday.
Davide is an excellent host and we are happy to confirm all the previous comments about his commitment to making guests feel at home and helping with anything that is worrying you. He kept topping up the wood basket in our room and arriving back after dinner to that warm cosy room was fantastic. Grazie Davide! We loved Penelope the cat too.

Room Tip: We loved the Dreams room.

My family and I (2 adults and three children: 6,4,4) visited the Cinque Terre arriving late in the evening and were welcomed by Davide on the terrace enjoying some wine with another happy couple staying at this Agriturismo. Within the time it took to shake his hand we felt like part of the family. I asked him many questions and the advice he gave turned out to be valuable and absolutely accurate - he told us of all of the great places to visit, where to park and informed us about the best local food. Our ground floor room was large, comfortable and opened onto an open terrace perfect for eating dinner and playing with kids. The breakfast was exceptional and he even made hot chocolate for our little girls while he found them toys to play with, a cat to pat and chickens to feed. We could not wish for anything else. We even caught a glimpse of the Pope while we were here. I can give no greater recommendation than saying we would return in a heartbeat.

From the moment we arrive to freshly baked biscuits, “focaccia”, homemade jam and “cappuccino”, to the moment we reluctantly drag ourselves away, the "Pope" Giuliano (not the Holy Pope obviously but a laic one) and his son Davide make us feel special and nothing is ever too much trouble. This is a wonderful base for travelling round the beautiful coast of the Cinque Terre, walking on the “Via dell’Amore” or trekking on the thousand paths of the Cinque Terre, visiting Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia e Vernazza. Its the perfect location for walks and cycles, big or small.
The Locanda del Papa is in the heart of the Regional Park of the Cinque Terre but for me it is enough to stay put in this beautifully converted country building to recharge my batteries before facing the world again.
We have stayed at the Locanda with the families of several of our friends. But we also know other families who come here solo to enjoy the space and quiet as well as the lovers …looking for peace, relaxation and...privacy.
The rooms are lovely and furnished in rustic style with ethnic shades, are individually designed and beautifully fresh and inviting. Everything was immaculately clean and the bed are very comfy. Really seems to be at home.
Our food (on request) in the evening was just amazing, as was the service. All cooked on site and with love. Ligurian cuisine, if you like… from “pansoti” (filled pasta) combined with sauces made from walnuts, mushrooms or cheese to the Ligurian “trenette with pesto sauce” (handmade: basel, extra virgin olive oil, pecorino and parmesan cheese, pine nuts and freshly ground salt), from “tomaxelle”(roulade of meat with cheese, eggs and bread) and rabbit with olives, to the unusual “cima alla Genovese” (meat stuffed with herbs, carrots, eggs, cheese and brain).
We absolutely loved the space inside and outside of the Locanda and will definitely be booking up again soon.

Wonderful hosts. The food was absolutely outstanding. The room was very clean and comfortable. Our two daughters were on fold out beds and this made the room a bit full but still plenty of space for our luggage and a table. Beautiful location although a little difficult to find. wifi very reliable. excellent access point to the cinque terre and a lovely place to chill out over an outstanding meal at the end of the day. A special note on the homemade jams at breakfast...amazing.

We have been there 3 families with children, and we have spent one spectacular holiday near Cinque Terre. More than the beautiful places that we have seen around, the big impact on our holiday, was meeting David and his Papa (Giuliano). David, an Juventus fan, assured us a tasty breakfast with homemade jams, fresh bread and juice, and help us with all we need to know about the places we intended to see. We have the chance to eat in three evenings what Papa and one of this friends prepared for us. Days after we arrived home, we still discuss about it, and we have been in Italy for many times, but never we had such an impressive and tasty dinner.
One other evening Papa took us to a restaurant in La Spezia, a restaurant far from tourist eyes that we enjoyed a lot.
If you have luck, you can listen Papa stories about the countries he have seen (over 100) and the music he likes.
The house is in very quite place with nice view to the hills and villages around it. The rooms are OK, each with its reasonable bathroom.
We hope to return soon in this place.

We stayed three nights at Locanda del Papa and really enjoyed our stay. David was a great host and the place has a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
Our room was pretty and a good size with a small but completely adequate bathroom with a good shower.
Breakfast was basic but tasty - fresh breads, with homemade jams with juice and good, fresh coffee.
The location would be difficuly if you don't have a car but is otherwise a lovely and peaceful retreat. The local tratoria (walking distance) is very good and means you can have a glass or two over dinner.
Would definately stay again.

Locanda del papa has a great location, it's a very nice house with an even better terrace, our bedroom was very nice, but we both agreed that David, the owner, is the factor that makes this place very very good. He's very positive, full of humor and warmth, gives great and helpful tips where to go and serves a very decent breakfast. Thank you David : you ARE a great host! The trattoria on 5 min. walk is excellent by the way.
