“Overall, great stay”
Reviewed 29 June 2008

We found the hotel easy enough, but expect a 10 minute walk from the train station. There is an info desk at the train station where you can get a map and it is on the free one they provide.

The staff were friendly enough and check in was a breeze. Having read other reviews on the best floor to stay on I asked for one above Reception floor but these weren't available. We stayed one floor below reception but on the other side of the building and it was great. It wasn't noisy, though with the tiles you did hear alot of footsteps. The room was clean and the breakfast for us was included, and it was a very good continental breakfast with a good selection. Would definitely stay again if in La Spezia

Great hotel (though hard to find). Location is convenient - but tucked away. The room was huge - and well decorated (as was the bathroom). A definate 4 star...and quite a treat for this area! Great value.....

Once we actually found it, this hotel was great!
*** Beautiful modern room
*** Great breakfast
*** Nestled into the main La Spezia district
*** Directly on the main street of the locals' nightly evening walk
*** Quiet, with safe and security features
Minuses:
- - - HARD to find from the train station--it is NOT "meters from the station", probably more like 1/2 mile, LOTS of hills
- - - Has the power restrictions we saw in some European hotels. You have to insert your key to be able to turn the power on, which means you can't charge your camera batteries while you are out at dinner!

  • Liked — great room and breakfast, proximity to main street
  • Disliked — My Hotel's website was quite misleading about the distance and location from train station

As we came in at night it was a trick to find it in the dark, but we lucked out and got one of the few parking spots right in the front of the hotel. The elevator takes you down to ground level of the old town, which was pedestrian friendly and certainly worth the visit. The walk to the train station to go to the Cinque Terra is easy, making this a great home base for visiting that area.

The hotel is modern and updated, the staff very friendly and accommodating, and the room was better than expected.

MapQuest gave us the right location, Google maps gave us the wrong side of the tracks, so I recommend checking with the hotel staff directly for directions. Easy once you done it, but parking can be a problem so leave your car once you've found a spot!

Luckily we only stayed at this hotel for 1 night while driving through the area. Be aware there's hardly any parking around. The hotel has a garage but very few spaces available against additional charge.

The room: the walls are made of cardboard - you literally hear everything. Someone drops a pen on the floor in a room across the corridor, it wakes you up, someone flushes their toilet, you think you have a guest in the bathroom. We were assigned a room with handicap facilities - no problem with that other than we're not handicapped and found the empty bathroom weird next to the tiny, tiny bedroom. Our room (406) was situated one floor down (yes, down) from the reception, in fact just beneath reception so each time somebody walked into the hotel, we could hear the footsteps through the ceiling. Each time the phone rang at reception, we heard it, each time a coffee was prepared at breakfast (situated just next to reception), we heard the coffee machine going. Our room had one window overlooking a tiny courtyard where one grey looking palm tree tried to grow... the room hardly had any natural light at all. Long curtains kept the little light there was out. To our disgust the curtains also hid a dirt y old McDonald bag and dust balls. There are no carpets in the entire hotel so again, there's a terrible echoe. Taking into account that there is a 1 cm opening below the door of each room, again, you hear people walking or talking in the corridor as if they were just 30 cm away...It was simply an awful experience. We did not sleep at all during the whole night and the 150 € for just one night was a real ripoff.

Stay away if you can! If you have no other choice than to stay here, then ask for a room on 6th or 7th floor (reception is on 5th floor and there are 3 floors below reception = very dark and gloomy).

This Hotel is hard to find, high on the hill but its not bad.

Elevator in Hotel will take you to the street level where you can shop and or eat out.

Make sure you insist on a NO smoking room.

Its good,well priced accommodation.

My parents stayed in La Spezia and were surprised when I didn't take their advice to stay at the Jolly Hotels La Spezia in favor of My Hotels.

We got a great rate - better through Expedia than booking through the hotel directly (strange!). There are about 5 free parking spaces in front of the hotel and we were lucky enough to snag one of them. Even though we only stayed one night before heading to Cinque Terre, they allowed us to leave our car parked in the free spot for a full 24 hours after we checked out. They even held our luggage for us!

Staff speaks great English and is very, VERY friendly. The staff seems to hand off information very well to the next staff member taking over as the shifts changed. We had a bit of a unique parking situation and I thought I'd need to re-explain our situation to each new staff member but they already knew before I got 10 words into the explanation.

Room was very comfortable, modern, and large for European standards. Bathroom was clean and modern as well. The restaurants recommended by the hotel seemed a little sketchy but then again we didn't dine there so you can't really judge a book by its cover. If you park in the garage it's 15 Euros per night and it's not exactly close to the hotel - a few hundred yards away in the opposite direction of the one-way street. Again this is just what I was told as I didn't have to park in the garage.

La Spezia is a bit disappointing when compared to the Cinque Terre a few short miles away. This hotel is very close to the train station (La Spezia Centrale), maybe a 10-minute walk. Great as a jump-off point to the Cinque Terre, otherwise I see no reason to stay in La Spezia. If your travels do point you here, My Hotels is the way to go!
