I go to this hotel every year. It is always fantastic. The hotel, the gorgeous flowers, the extremely competent staff. The food is wonderful. It's the best hotel in the world. But save your euros as it's very expensive.

Our four day visit to the Splendido was relaxing and happy. We met up with our daughter at the airport in Genoa and collected our car for the short drive to Portofino. What a tatty car from Avis with a mirror stuck on with tape. In spite of the awful car we were received as if we were driving a Bentley or some other prestige mark. We received a warm welcome from the staff who throughout our stay were faultless. Our bedroom was rather small for the price we were paying but the room and its bathroom were very well equipped. There was plenty of space for our luggage, there was lots of cupboard space and lots of plugs for all our internet requirements. The shower was in the bath which is not ideal, but at least we had a bath and the products on offer were really nice. there was real linen on the comfy bed which was a treat.

On the downside we thought the food was very disappointing and are glad we did not go for the half board option. After the first day when we lunched on the pool terrace and dined in the restaurant we preferred to eat elsewhere. The hotel provides an excellent free shuttle bus between itself and the village below. The weather was not wonderful but it really did not matter too much. We had a wonderful view of the large motor yachts and sailing yachts coming and going from our balcony.

I must mention the fun element of the hotel. The pianist and Antonio, the well-known head waiter
encourage people to come and join in singing and dancing. Its like an apres ski atmosphere and if you had mentioned this to me I would have cringed, but in fact it was such fun and we had a couple of really happy evenings. I would happily go back one day.

We were disappointed on arrival to be told that they had made an error with our booking and that the room which we had booked ( double with sea view) was not available for our first night (out of three). However, they were extremely apologetic and offered us a smaller room for the first night and a junior suite for the other two by way of recompense, which we accepted. The first room was a little small but beautiful and with the famous sea view. The next day the staff moved all our belongings (without us having to bother packing) to the suite which was fantastic! I take the view that anyone can make a mistake and that it is the way with which mistakes are dealt with which matters and we were not disappointed.
The hotel is beautiful and staff excellent. Breakfast is very good although the chef didn't seem to understand the concept of scrambled eggs which came as a (very good) omelette. We had dinner there once which was excellent although very expensive; 40 euros for 4 small slivers of cheese!
Well worth going for a special occasion; it was our thirtieth wedding anniversary; unforgettable

Room Tip: Sea view definitely

We stayed at the Splendido Mare which is the smaller annex down by the port area. It is slightly cheaper than staying at the main hotel and in my opinion the location is much better because you can just walk outside and be in the thick of things. You have access to all the hotel amenities up on the top anyway (pool, spa, shuttle etc.)
The ambience is more relaxed down at the Mare. We had dinner at La Terrazza up in the main hotel, very flashy, quite good, nice view, very expensive but par for the course.
We spent many a day lounging by the pool too.
The hotel arranged many wonderful dinners for us as well as great whole day boat excursion which took us to cinque terre.
The best part, i think, was the wonderful staff down at Splendido Mare. Because it's a smaller hotel, the staff was almost like family and they were excellent. No request was too difficult for them and we were treated in a way that made us feel special the whole time we were there.

On the strength of several years of top reviews from Andrew Harper, I felt compelled to fly out here to check out this property. I had a very nice suite 115 and it was as perfect as it needed to be with pretty decor and two nice terraces with a sea view. The famed view of the sea in my opinion is overrated, and nothing compared to what you would see in Ravello, Italy or a Reid's Palace in Madeira, Portugal. You don't see the port area from the hotel. I have trouble comprehending this place: It has a steady clientele of repeat visitors who simply love this place and keep coming back. Lots of Americans who feel this is the emblem of the Italy that they love even though I don't think any locals would frequent the hotel bar with the guy in the loud colored jackets singing tunes in the evenings which I thought was kinda cheesy. I found the food rather saucy and more like the Italian food that Americans want to eat rather than what northern Italians would actually enjoy. Dinner on the terrace: my fish was not well fileted, desserts were rather uninspired. Second night I ate at the sister hotel Mare at the port and the food there I thought was more genuinely Italian and better across the board. I did have lunch on the terrace which is a thing to do there; it was 80 Euro for pizza, water, a small plate of salad from the salad bar and an ice cream sundae which is probably the most expensive small lunch I ever had, but it was also some of the best pizza and ice cream sundae (great cream and berries) I've ever had, so in this case it was exceptional and deserving. This is a hotel where you might want to take half board if you are staying 2-3 nights because the menu prices are very expensive. The swimming pool is sea water; the gym is rather small and there is a dry sauna. I was expecting more facilities for an exceptional property. This whole Portofino looks like a place for paparazzi wanabees and people who want to feel they are in a jetsetting environment; I felt definitely at the mercy of the local taxi mafia who charge 150 Euro for a transfer to the airport whereas you can take a taxi from the center of Genoa (a few miles from the airport) to the hotel for 60 Euro. You can take a train into Genoa but they want 45 Euro just to take you 10 minutes to the train station. The hotel concierges seem very pleased to mark up the transportation and take cuts from this. To be fair, there are only 3 licensed taxi drivers in Portofino and the "season" is 4 months long so they want to make hay while the sun shines. I walked around town to cheaper hotels and found that everyone pays these inflated prices for airport taxi transfers so it is not just a matter of this hotel. After a day, you'll be yelling Ciao to Roberto in the town square (one of the 3 drivers). Switzerland might be a more expensive country but the localized ripoffs here actually make this place more expensive than what I paid earlier in the week in Switzerland. This hotel is very overpriced for what you get compared to other places; you're paying for the allure of Portofino. In my opinion, it's just not worth it and Portofino is not the end all and be all of Italy. If you really want to splurge in an exceptional place, you could do better elsewhere.

Save every penny/cent you can, and sell everything you possess if necessary, but try to spend at least one night of your life at the Slendido, with a view of the bay. You'll never regret it or forget it.
