“Value for money in Portofino”
Reviewed 11 July 2012

This hotel is quite old-fashioned - the sort of small hotel you might expect to find in an English seaside town, with an elderly owner-manager and some seriously 1970s looking carpets. However, the rooms are clean and of a reasonable size, the A/C works, the breakfast is standard fare, and it is the most reasonable place in Portofino.

Room and bathroom are small but clean. No view but great value for the location. Great to be in Portofofino is the morning or late at night when the crowd is gone.
Nice little breakfast is included. Nothing fancy but good stuff from the bakery around the corner.
Forget it in the summer or spring weekends. There is nothing in that price range around. We got really lucky and the owner was laughing at us when we asked for friday night.

Given the prices of other hotels in Portofino, this one is pretty good in comparison. The room was really small and the bathroom was tiny but it was fine for 2 nights. The bed was comfortable and it was clean.
The owner was really helpful with places to go and getting around. Breakfast wasn't great but the coffee was delicious.
Pretty perfect for a short break and the location is great. Just off the main Piazza near all the restaurants and due to it being tucked away it was quiet.
Would stay again and would recommend.

Room Tip: Maybe ask for one of the bigger rooms - they are more expensive though.

Delightful hotel tucked away off the central alley leading to the waterfront square. Very convenient, great value. Closeness to the square and charm of the hotel make this spot well worth the extra trouble it takes to get your luggage from the taxi area down the alley and up the walkway.

This hotel was definitely the best value-for-money of any hotels in Portofino, and we really enjoyed our stay. It is literally 2-3 minutes from the Marina area in Portofino, as well as the town square where you can park or get the bus to Santa Margherita and other areas nearby.

The main question is, why stay in Portofino at a huge premium, instead of staying in Santa Margherita? SM has many better quality, more affordable hotels, as well as equal (if not better) restaurants, beaches, etc.

My recommendation would be to get a hotel in SM instead, and to take the bus or drive to Portofino to spend a day there.

One thing to know is that a taxi from Portofino to SM for dinner cost us 30.00 EUR, and the taxi back from SM to Portofino later that night cost us 50.00 EUR. So (1) its definitely worth taking the bus instead, + (2) you are better off staying in SM, where the bars and beaches are, and just doing a day-trip to Portofino.

Portofino is charming and the Hotel Eden has a fabulous location. Definitely ask for room #7 with the terrace. We practically lived out there. The room and the bathroom were tired though. The breakfast was just OK. Portofino is very pricey so this B level hotel is very expensive for what it is. Would recommend staying in Santa Margarita or Rapello and day tripping it into Portofino. We were there three days which was too long. The owner was very helpful with recommendations.

Room Tip: Pick number 7 for the terrace

Hotel Eden is a very affordable place to stay in Portofino. It's located close to restaurants and the water is just a short stroll away.

Having said that, our room was tiny and barely fit all our luggage, and our window faced an alley with no natural light. The bathroom was so small two people couldn't pass each other, the shower was cramped and difficult to use. The beds were as hard as rocks and we all ended up with neck strain from sleeping on them. Our room came complete with a musty/old smell that took a while to get used to. Parking is difficult in Portofino, and with the location of this hotel you will have to lug your bags for quite a distance before having to climb the many stairs to the front door. Once inside you had better hope you are in room two, because all other rooms with a view are only accessible by stairs.

I could imagine that if you were in one of the rooms facing the garden you might find this place more attractive, but if you get stuck in room number 3 you might get a slightly claustrophobic and wished you had stayed somewhere else. This place is probably just one step up from a backpackers.
