We stayed with our three small children three nights in SML in mid October. The Hotel Continental has a spectacular setting, good food and nice staff but since it is low (or according to their prices mid) season, all facilities like the outdoor pool, bar etc are shut down. Everything feels very empty and out of season, but SML was still very nice and the weather still quite mild.

My wife and I with another couple (in our mid 50's) stayed here three nights in mid-October, post high tourist season. Absolutely no complaints about service. All planning and email correspondence was flawless and our rooms were exactly as described and reserved. All staff/employees were kind and helpful. Our room had a terrace facing the ocean for outstanding views of the sea and Santa Margherita. Not an extremely large room but larger then most European hotels. The buffet breakfast had an ample choices for all types of appetites. We booked early and our rooms were 266 Euros/night. We did not ask the staff for restaurant recommendations but just walked around SM till we had a "good feeling".

The train station is a five minute walk from the hotel (downhill and then up a short hill). A ten minute downhill walk from the hotel and you are in the center of Santa Margherita.

Bottom line is that we were very impressed and pleasantly surprised by the charm of this area and Hotel.

Room Tip: We had an ocean view terrace and loved it. I can't comment on the other types of rooms but they...

We stayed here for 4 nights late September and enjoyed the beautiful area. The hotel is very good although rooms are small they have great views and are clean. Another couple complained that their room 506 adjoined another room via a door near their bathroom which afforded little privacy. Stefan at reception speaks very good English and was very helpful, hotel is handy for rail station, restaurants and town centre. Be aware cab to/from station at min charge 20 Euros for 300 metres trip.
When taking trains in Italy be very careful to have tickets validated by putting them through a machine at the station before getting on the train. There are ticket inspectors who take great delight in issuing on the spot fines to most tourists who have not read the small print or are first time train travelers. It would make more sense to validate tickets on the train but don't be caught out by this lucrative, little known rort.

Room Tip: Room 304 although near elevators is quiet with great sea views high up.

The Hotel is on a hill overlooking the village of Santa Margherita and the Ligurian Sea. The perfect word to describe the setting is idyllic. We lucked into an ocean view, and the view is just shy of spectacular. The hotel is older, but very well maintained. Some of the rooms are older but we were in a newer section that faced the ocean on the lower level. Our room was spacious and had a patio attached with a great view of the ocean. It was a short walk down the hill to the village of Santa Margherita and the ferry to Portofino. We spent three nights at the hotel and it made a great base for touring the Ligurian coast.

This hotel is located right on the ocean at Santa Margherita. It has beautiful gardens and a private swimming area (in the ocean). Like most Italian hotels, the bathrooms were pretty ordinary, but you get used to flooding the floor every time you have a shower.
Locking and unlocking our room was a nightmare, as the key didn't work properly.
Most of the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, both at Reception and at the breakfast buffet. The breakfast buffet was pretty good with lots of choices.
The town of Santa Margherita is gorgeous, particularly when we went (September) as it wasn't crowded. Take the ferry to Portofino. If you want to go to Cinque Terre, go when it's not crowded. The train trip is dirty and crowded and really spoilt it for me.
This is a great hotel to unwind and relax; do plenty of reading and use their free internet. Their are plenty of free magazines lying around and beautiful places to sit and read. The view is awesome!
This was probably the best location of our Italian holiday (partly because it wasn't crowded!).
I almost forgot to mention - our room was right over the main road and very noisy. Also, there are no night-curtains in the room, so the light was shining in, all night long.

Room Tip: Try and get one with an ocean view. Rooms near the road are VERY noisy

This hotel has the most beautiful grounds and views. From the breakfast terrace, the view over the bay is out of this world. And the view from my top floor panoramic room was to simply breathtaking. I found the staff very charming, friendly and super helpful at all times. They could not do more to help. The sea side area is fabulous, getting the sun right until it closes with the sea right on the doorstep. The attendants are courteous. The beds are 30 euros for non hotel guests but this is the system on the Italian riviera. And here the beds are not too close together. Plus there are many regulars who are not hotel guests but who have obviously been coming to the sea here for years.

My room was recently refurbished so I had no issues with it - and I loved the balcony. Some people have complained about the old fashioned rooms but this hotel is unique, not a chain, and is family run - and definitely Italian in the grand old style rather than Dolce & Gabanna. For me this is a plus - the world definitely slows down here and finally I can relax. Wifi worked in the hotel and in my room but not on the sea side. Gym will suit most except fitness fanatics who must lift heavy weights. Spa is lovely.

Breakfast was good - particularly for Italy which does not go great guns for breakfast.

Room Tip: top floor sea view with a balcony - definitely worth the extra euros

The hotel sits on the picturesque hill side with cascading gardens reaching the sea below. This is the only hotel in Santa Margherita directly on the shore with unobstracted views of the sea and harbor. Located about 500 meters from the town center the Continental enjoys peace and quiet with no foot traffic. Our room on the fourth floor was located on the side of the building and had huge 8' x 30' balcony with a couple of tables with chairs. Views of sunsets and the town below lit with soft orange tint at night were just breathtaking. Add to this a bottle of excelent local wine and cheese and you get the picture.
Room was better than we had expected - very comfortable if slightly outdated. But it featured Japanise-made toilette which was trying to do everything for you, even without being asked.
We used the hotel as a home base and spent all days doing short side trips in the mountains. Tiny vilages, castles, chirches were spectacular, food - great, wine - superb!. But best of all were people, friendly, understanging, helping in every way. Hotel staff did not have any problems with English, vilagers did not care - they just made sure we would understand them, and we did!

Room Tip: Ask to the highest floor and on the side of the building. Views from the balcony are great. Rooms fa...
