This property did not live up to its billing for a variety of reasons. 1) When the temperature of our room reached 80F, according to our world time/temperature/alarm clock, we asked for the air conditioning as advertised in the hotel's brochure. We were told that the a/c was turned off as October was out of season. 2) Getting the attention of the people at the concierge's desk was often difficult. On one occasion, I asked for help and rang he little bell: no response to my three attempts. I sought the help of the bartender who finally rounded up a desk staffer. Perhaps the hotel reduced staff as the occupancy of the off season no longer demanded multiple staffers at the desk. 3) The wait staff appeared at breakfast to be indifferent and not particularly interested in serving the guests. It seemed anxious to clear the dining areas. Food offerings were not particularly interesting and some offerings were often not available as trays were not quickly replenished (scrambled eggs, for example). Tour groups, such as ours, were seated in an area away from the dining areas with views of the water.
The rooms were generally clean. Furnishings were adequate although bordered on the "spartan" as most guests during the season no doubt were more interested in the beaches than the nature of their accommodations. Ask for the 4th floor and a room facing the water. There, you'll have a great view and a balcony.
The Santa Margharita is a marvelous town with all the attributes one might want: a location on the water, marina, working fishing fleet, clean streets, nice ambiance with interesting local architecture, and some very good restaurants.
The hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk from the town center.
The choice of this hotel will depend the guest's use and expectations. Opting for sun and sea will strongly influence the choice of Regina Elena. If however, the guest is part of a group looking for ease and comfort after a day of outings, one might look for a another hotel.
