“The centre of the upper town”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

We did a 2 hour walking tour of the upper town. I would suggest doing the same to get the explanations of the main points of interest in Piazza Vecchia and the other points of interest in the upper town. The Piazza has a number of restaurants, so if you wish to people watch and enjoy a beverage, this is a great place to do so.

The place located in the middle of upper city - very nice place to have a seat and enjoy cold drink during summer. Surrounded by old buildings - great atmosphere

“Pleasant even in the rain”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

Beautiful place to be even when the cloud cover is low and it is raining. Plenty of old stuff to read about and see. Plenty of restaurants too.

“a bunch of history mixed with good food”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

Citta Vecchia , the "old town" and it's center the Piazza Vecchia are worth a visit. Once Bergamo was part of the Venice empire which is shown at the top of the archway - the white lion. On the opposite side of this archway is the white marble palace, the library. Sitting on it's doorsteps, eating some ice cream and people watching is really relaxing. If you pass through the archway you find on your left side the old Dome all made of beautiful marble but the masterpiece ist Santa Maria Maggiore. The dome was built by the powerful people - in Bergamo still the church - and Santa Maria Maggiore was built by the people, piece by piece. If you have the possibility to have a guided tour of the 4 wooden inlay pictures they are just stunning. On the left side of Santa Maria Maggiore is a water cistern. Bergamo was independent in former times as there are several fountains.
And yes, climb the tower.
Not far from Piazza Vecchia is one of the oldest italian Theater - now renovated ....have a look!
There are lot's of small, good restaurants around Piazza Vecchia ...try to go 1 street behind the beaten track and you will find lots of hidden gems.
Try to avoid weekends as this is the time for locals to show off and to walk the whole family ;-) in particularly on weekends "Citta alta" and "Piazza Vecchia" era really crowded.
