“Outstanding location”
Reviewed 29 August 2013

Stayed here for just one night. We had two rooms. Ours was overlooking the ferry quay with splendid views of the lake. The kids had a dinky 70s room at the back of the hotel. This room badly needs an upgrade. Breakfast was very basic with horrible coffee. Service from all the staff was good, always with a smile and always ready to accomodate our requests. The pool was a refreshing spot in the midday heat. Lunch at the restaurant was pleasant.

Room Tip: Book a room with lake view

We stayed at this hotel in early July as we were attending a wedding in the area. Bellagio is simply beautiful and has a breathtaking view over the lake Como. The hotel is right in front of the pier where the ferry arrives.

This hotel looks a bit like an old Mediterranean palace, similar to those one would find on the French riviera. It is however operated in a way that makes it look a bit like an amateur family business. To note that the staff may appear as quite rude for non Italians. One of the first things we noticed was that the room keys were hanging over the reception counter so technically anybody could grab any key; we had a bit a of a question mark around the overall security of the place but had no negative experience during our stay.

We booked a triple room (which was in fact a double room with a large sofa which could get used as a third bed) with a view over the lake... which was totally worth it! It was a quite large room with air conditioning (which is not the standard in Northern Italy) which was a life saver as temperatures are quite high in that season (around 34°C / 93°F). The bathroom comprised a sink, a toilet, a bidet and a small-ish shower. Also, there was no "do not disturb" door hanger so the housekeeping woke us up both mornings.

The hotel also has a small swimming pool on the back in a nice garden. Nothing fancy but very enjoyable on a hot day. You however need to bring your own towel.

Room Tip: Definitely get a front view room as it oversees the lake.

Table at the lakeside, went for the menu complet which is something we normally avoid but were too tired to bother to do anything else. Turned out to be superb, all fresh fish, and we were not made to feel like cheapskates for choosing it. Stayed at least two hours, no reason to move, good food, blithe scenery and even our conversation wasn't too boring.

Room Tip: Forget the ***** internet. Stay at home if that's what you want. It's nothing to do with t...

This hotel entrance was on the street level between the car ferry and passenger ferry. Car parking was less than 1/2 block away. Internet available for a small fee. Their bar was across the street and also served gelato, simple lunches, drinks. On Friday and Saturday nights there was live music. The rooms were small but clean and neat. The bathroom was very updated. The only down side was the squeaky wood floors. The air conditioner was excellent. We had a lake view with a French balcony but noise was at a minimum and did not disturb us. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Front rooms face the lake.

Stayed at this hotel with my 2 friends for 2 weeks from July 10th to 24th. We travelled with Inghams and were very impressed with both Inghams and the hotel itself. Hotel very convenient facing the ferry terminal and really easy to get to other places from. Bellagio lovely to walk around of an evening with lots of little bars. Nice little cheap bar at the side of the church around the back. Very popular with the locals. When we first arrived we were not too happy with the room we were alloted at the hotel, which was on the 4th floor. The room was quite small for 3 people with not enough wardrobe space. We mentioned this at reception and were offered another room next to our existing room on the same floor or another room on the 3rd floor. We opted for the room on the 3rd floor as this was much bigger, overlooking the pool area with a nice modern shower etc. The hotel staff were very helpful and all spoke really good English, which made things a lot easier for us. The dining room was run really well by Perry and his team of waiters. The atmosphere was really friendly and easygoing but professional at the same time. The food was really nice. Normal continental breakfast with lots of choice. Food was replaced as soon as stocks went low and you only had to ask a waiter if you needed something that you couldnt see. The evening meal was a 4 course dinner consisting of salad bar which you helped yourself to and then all other courses were served by the waiters. This was mainly different types of pasta (which were all quite decicious) or soup etc. The main meal often consisted of fish (all different types including trout, salmon, sea bass, bream, etc) or meats, beef, veal, chicken, kebabs. The afters were all homemade and some of the fruit tarts and cheesecakes were really nice. There was the odd thing that we didnt like but there was always something else to have, no need to go hungry. Everybody we spoke to said they thought the food was good. We priced an average meal out in one of the many restaurants and to have what we were getting would have cost us at least 40 euros each. So good value for money with the half board option. We often changed our evening meal for a lunch. This was taken in the bar overlooking the lake. Again an excellent 3 course lunch with a lovely atmosphere and good attentive service from the staff. My friend loved the iceceam and as they made their own the option was always there to have this as an afters, which she often did! We paid for a £45 ticket on the boats and were able to travel on and off the boats and visit many of the other little places around. Varenna is worth a trip. Had a lovely lunch there and a nice walk along their front. Lecco also a nice quite place to go. We would come back from a day out and then use the hotel pool to sunbathe and chill out. It was the perfect balance. We also used the ticket at night to go over the lake for a boat ride. Lovely holiday, good hotel, would definitely recommend.

We were really pleased with our stay of three nights at the excelsior. We paid extra for a lake view room and were not disappointed. We were placed in a room at the front of the hotel, with air conditioning and a shower! (Our main concern was that the booking stated we'd only have a bath). The room was modern and over the bank next door. The hotel staff were very helpful and were very keen to help at every opportunity. The view was totally stunning and the only drawback was the noise from the ferry port and bars directly outside the window. On balance though, I'd take the noise! Can only recommend this hotel. Our experience does not match up at all with several of the more critical reviews here.

Stayed here for 9 nights in June/ July and found the hotel to be adequate. Our room was at the back so it was quiet and had a nice view of the garden and pool. The staff were all polite and helpful and the breakfasts were fine. The position of the hotel is outstanding near the ferries and many restaurants but a steep walk to some of them.
Room lacked air conditioning so became very hot, we did have 2 fans but they are not really adequate.
