Hotel Excelsior Splendide
Ranked #11 of 16 Hotels in Bellagio
Reviewed 12 August 2008

Panicked like mad once we'd booked the Excelsior on Expedia as others spoke of bed bugs etc! It was lovely! We got a lake room, no 24 and the huge french doors swung open to reveal the lake and mountains. It's a great hotel. The breakfast was basic but included in the cheap price (100 euros a night I think we paid) but we got hot drinks, juice, yoghurt, dried fruit, fresh fruit, cereal, bread rolls and croissants - more than enough for us thank you! The bathroom was a bit basic, no shower curtain or anywhere to hang the actual shower, but really hot powerful water supply so nothing to grumble about really for the price.

The location is spot on, you couldn't ask for better. The swimming pool is a hidden treat - you get to it on the 1st floor and its set in a pretty private garden with railings. Really nice place to sunbathe away from the town.

We took someone elses review advice and went to the Metropole for the lakeside meal, lunch or dinner is fab... and the Florence Bar does excellent coffees, panninis or champagne!! We also went to Il Baschia up the cobbles towards the hill which has a grape vine growing all over the outside, and the meal was just wonderful and really reasonable.

The most spectacular hotel in Bellagio is the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. All the others can't compare but are very good as its such a classy resort.

We took a boat trip down to Como itself to have a nose around, but it isnt a patch on Bellagio - I can see why they call it the Jewel of Como.

We stayed at this hotel from 6/22-6/24/08. After reading many of the mixed reviews I was a bit nervous about my decision knowing how picky my wife & daughter are about their hotels. Even my 14 yr old daughter always tells me to book us in a 4 or 5 star. This was a very busy time to book a hotel in Bellagio & all the other hotels were completely sold out (I was booking 2 months in advance), so I had no choice & decided to chance it since we really wanted to stay in Bellagio.

I had booked through Orbitz & had emailed the hotel to request a lake view room that had been updated with A/C. I had emailed the hotel several times before we arrived to confirm our reservation & always got back a quick professional friendly reply.

When we arrived we thought the hotel was in an excellent location right near the ferry dock & as close to the water as you could get. It looked nice from the outside & looked decent when we walked in. You could tell in it's day this hotel was probably very beautiful. It looked like it could use some updating, but it was clean & we found the hotel staff to be very friendly & they spoke excellent english.

When we checked into our lake view room we discovered the room had not be made up yet nor did it have A/C. We called down to the front desk & told them we definitely wanted a room with A/C since the temps were in the mid 90's & humid when we were there. They told us all the lake view rooms with A/C were taken, but they immediately put us in a nice updated room on the 4th floor that did not have a lake view, but the A/C worked great in the new room & we were happy to settle for this thinking we were going to be all day out on the lake anyhow. I believe they also told us that the 4th floor has been completely updated. So you might want to request that floor when making a reservation.

There was one cute, bubbly girl who worked behind the front desk who was super friendly & she was very helpful. We even met her one day on her day off when we were shopping in Bellagio & she even stopped & talked with us for while. She seemed like a real person (Can't remember her name).

Before we left Bellagio we decided to check out the other hotels on the main drag closest to the lake. Hotel Metropole & Hotel Swisse both looked like dumps- they both needed major updating & were not clean and the rest of the family agreed that we would never stay there. Hotel du lac & Hotel Florence were both very nice & clean, but the staff that we spoke to did not seem very friendly. The standout hotel in Bellagio is definitely Grand Hotel Villa Serbolloni which is probably the only 5 star hotel in Bellagio. There were Rolls Royce's & Ferraris parked in the circular driveway & they have a beautiful pool that overlooks the lake. We swam in the Excelsior pool which is located behind the hotel- it was decent. None of the other hotels that we saw have pools right in Bellagio other then Serbolloni. Plan on spending HUGE $$ if you stay there.

The breakfast at the Excelsior was decent. They had pastries, cereal, hard boiled eggs, bread, juice & coffee. We were in Italy for 3 weeks & we stayed at 8 different hotels & thought the breakfast here was average compared to the rest of the places we stayed at. We would definitely consider staying at this hotel again depending on how the rate compared to Hotel Florence or Hotel DuLac. Even my picky wife & daughter thought the hotel was a solid European 3 star (US standards 2.5 star) with no major complaints from either of them considering we were only in the room to sleep & shower.

When your there check out Villa Balbianello in Lenno. It is the most beautiful villa on the lake. It doesn't get as much press as Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, but it's much nicer & unique. They also filmed a Bond movie there.

Lake Como was one of our favorite stops in Italy & besides here we went to Milan, Venice, Cortina (Dolomites), Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Cinque Terre & Rome.

Gordon Ramsay needs to turn this place upside down!!!!!!!!
Appeared a pleasant property from the outside but this hotel lacks any leadership in all departments.
Let me start with the detail.
Placed in an attic room with lake views but room was barren. No matresss protector on the bed depsite 2 requests. Had to place a blanket on it in the end. Pillows resembled some dirty old compacted material and wokeup on first night with sore neck. Despite requesting another pilllow , same quality appeared in a near pillowcase. Dinning room set up as a cheap cafferteria. Plastic cups for juice and the coffee experience was from a machine in a deliberate attempt to save money.
on staff. The staff that were there had no presence ; were not particularly reponsive to requests . eg We choose the site as it had a pool but the pool was separated from the property and not heated. False advertising don't you think unless one is a whale or walrus.( They were fussed about our concerns)
Buffet on the saturday night expensive and presented like a cheap school dinner
We will not be back to Hotel Splendide unless Gordon has fired all the staff, repainted the place and introduced a professsional team to run the place. An absolute disgrace and don't let them take your money as well.

My husband and I arrived with trepidation after reading some of the bad reviews, all I can say to those people is, if you want 5 star - pay for it. This hotel was obviously very beautiful, at one time, and it is true to say it could do with some updating but this is mostly of the decorating kind. We paid for, and got a lake view room which was brilliant although yes, the orange paintwork was not. The bed was very comfortably and we also got extra pillows on request; the bathroom was very clean. I agree with other reviewees that the staircase alone was something to behold, it was fantastic and when you stood in reception and looked up at the very top - it was a beautiful sight. There was only one meal throughout our 7 day stay that we didn't particularly enjoy but this could happen anywhere and was more our personal preference than it not being cooked/presented well; I would agree that the coffee could be improved though! The hotel owner, receptionists and head waiter were so kind and efficient when I was unwell and needed a doctor and more than one member of staff asked after my wellbeing the next and following day. Bellagio was definitely the best resort we visited and the hotel was directly opposite one ferry and minutes from others. The shopping area was lovely and everyone we met was friendly and helpful. If we ever went back to Bellagio, we would definitely stay at this hotel again, and we met some very nice people (from Darlington?!) If there was a downside it was definitely the pool area, it does need some loving care, however, as it rained 5 days out of our 7 day holiday, it didn't matter. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, she's is a lovely old lady who, like some of us holidaymakers, is now a little tired.

We arrived at the Excelsior Splendide with some trepidation – but with our eyes open after reading other reports on TripAdvisor. The foyer hints at her glamour of years gone by, and the staff is… appropriate.

Our room on the first floor was awash of shades of orange – which was an interesting choice – but the room was very clean and the bathroom very serviceable. The bed itself was very comfortable though we did ask for – and got additional pillows. We did have though a small balcony which overlooked the ferry point and the gorgeous lake – which we used a lot over our 2 days.

The highlights? It screams of its glamorous past even though she is a little jaded. The staircase alone is worth the admiration. The position is excellent for ferries to the other parts of Lake Como and walking around Bellagio. Sitting at your balcony (there seems to be only 3 rooms that had them) and watching the sunset over Lake Como makes this a great spot.

The disappointments? The breakfast was by far the worst we had in all of our European Holiday. The surly waiter didn’t make it any better. Megg44 mentioned in her review in Sept 2007, that the coffee in that machine needed replacing – well it obviously hasn’t and now churns our grainy thick tar – which in no way resembles coffee. Point of note – eat breakfast elsewhere. We did after the first morning.

It was a great place to stay short term. A balcony room made it wonderful but I won’t be revisiting.
